دارٌ بُليتُ بِحُبِّها
خَوّانَةٌever treacherous لِمُحِبِّهاto its lover
خَوّانَةٌ لِمُحِبِّها
An abode: I have been afflicted with love for it,
ever treacherous to its lover.
كُلٌّeveryone مُعَنّىtormented مُبتَلىًput to the test
كُلٌّ مُعَنّى مُبتَلىً
بِعَطائِهاby its giving وَبِسَلبِهاand by its taking away
بِعَطائِها وَبِسَلبِها
Everyone is tormented and tried
by its giving and its taking away,
وَبِخَلبِهاand by its beguilement وَغُرورِهاand its deceit
وَبِخَلبِها وَغُرورِها
وَبِبُعدِهاand by its distance وَبِقُربِهاand by its nearness
وَبِبُعدِها وَبِقُربِها
and by its beguilement and its deceit,
and by its distance and its nearness,
وَبِحَمدِهاand by praising it وَبِذَمِّهاand by blaming it
وَبِحَمدِها وَبِذَمِّها
وَبِحُبِّهاand by loving it وَبِسَبِّهاand by cursing it
وَبِحُبِّها وَبِسَبِّها
and by praising it and blaming it,
and by loving it and cursing it.
إِنif لَمnot تُعَنyou are aided بِقَناعَةٍby contentment
إِن لَم تُعَن بِقَناعَةٍ
ضاقَتit grows narrow عَلَيكَfor you بِرُحبِهاdespite its spaciousness
ضاقَت عَلَيكَ بِرُحبِها
If you are not aided by contentment,
it grows narrow for you despite its spaciousness.
ماnot تَنقَضيcomes to an end لَكَfor you لَذَّةٌa pleasure
ما تَنقَضي لَكَ لَذَّةٌ
إِلّاexcept بِرَوعَةِwith the shock of خَطبِهاits calamity
إِلّا بِرَوعَةِ خَطبِها
No pleasure of yours ends
except with the shock of its calamity.
إِنif أَقبَلَتit approaches بِغَضارَةٍwith prosperity
إِن أَقبَلَت بِغَضارَةٍ
سَحَّpour down النَعِيُّtidings of death بِجَنبِهاbeside it
سَحَّ النَعِيُّ بِجَنبِها
If it comes bearing prosperity,
tidings of death pour down beside it.
