غَفَلتُI was heedless وَلَيسَand is not المَوتُdeath عَنّيof me بِغافِلِat all heedless
وَإِنّيand indeed I أَراهُI see it بيupon me لَأَوَّلَsurely the first نازِلِvisitor
I have been heedless, yet death is not heedless of me.
And I see it as surely the first visitor to alight upon me.
نَظَرتُI looked إِلىat الدُنياthe world بِعَينٍwith an eye مَريضَةٍailing
وَفِكرَةِand the thinking of مَغرورٍa deluded person وَتَدبيرِand the planning of جاهِلِan ignorant person
I looked upon the world with an ailing eye,
And with a deluded man's thinking and an ignorant man's planning.
فَقُلتُso I said هِيَit الدارُthe abode الَّتيwhich لَيسَthere is not غَيرُهاany other than it
وَنافَستُand I vied مِنهاfrom it فيfor غُرورٍdelusion وَباطِلِand vanity
So I said, "It is the only abode there is."
And I vied for its delusions and vanities.
وَضَيَّعتُand I disregarded أَهوالاًterrors أَماميbefore me طَويلَةًlong-lasting
بِلَذَّةِfor the pleasure of أَيّامٍdays قِصارٍshort قَلائِلِfew
And I disregarded long-lasting terrors before me
For the pleasure of a few short days.
