أَلاah لِلَّهِto God أَنتَyou مَتىwhen تَتوبُwill you repent
وَقَدand already صَبَغَتhave dyed ذَوائِبَكَyour locks الخُطوبُmisfortunes
Ah, you are God's—when will you repent,
When misfortunes have already dyed your locks?
كَأَنَّكَas though you لَستَyou are not تَعلَمُyou know أَيُّwhat حَثٍّurging
يَحُثُّurges onward بِكَwith you الشُروقُsunrise وَلاnor الغُروبُsunset
As though you did not know how urgently
Sunrise and sunset drive you onward.
أَلَستَare you not تَراكَyou see yourself كُلَّevery صَباحِmorning يَومٍday
تُقابِلُyou confront وَجهَthe face of نائِبَةٌa calamity تَنوبُthat befalls
Do you not see yourself each morning
Facing a calamity as it befalls you?
لَعَمرُكَby your life ماnever تَهُبُّblows الريحُthe wind إِلّاexcept
نَعاكَannounced your death مُصَرِّحاًplainly ذاكَthat الهُبوبُblowing
By your life, no wind ever blows
But that blowing plainly announces your death.
إِلاah (apparently intended) لِلَّهِto God أَنتَyou فَتىًa youth وَكَهلاًand middle-aged
تَلوحُshow plainly عَلىupon مَفارِقِهِhis hair-partings الذُنوبُsins
Ah, you are God's—a youth, then a middle-aged man,
On whose hair-partings sins show plainly.
هُوَit is المَوتُdeath الَّذيwhich لاno بُدَّescape مِنهُfrom it
فَلاso let not تَلعَبplay بِكَwith you الأَمَلُhope الكَذوبُdeceitful
It is death, from which there is no escape;
So let not deceitful hope toy with you.
وَكَيفَand how تُريدُdo you wish أَنto تُدعىbe called حَكيماًwise
وَأَنتَwhile you لِكُلِّfor everything ماthat تَهوىyou desire رَكوبُan eager rider
And how do you wish to be called wise,
When you eagerly mount whatever you desire?
وَماand not تَعمىare blind العُيونُthe eyes عَنِto الخَطاياsins
وَلَكِنbut إِنَّماonly تَعمىare blind القُلوبُhearts
It is not the eyes that are blind to sins,
But only the hearts that are blind.
وَتُصبِحُand you awake صاحِكاًlaughing (apparently intended) ظَهراًback لِبَطنٍto belly
وَتَذكُرand you remember ماwhat اِجتَرَمتَyou committed فَلاyet do not تَذوبُmelt away
And you wake laughing, rolling from back to belly,
And remember your transgressions, yet do not melt away.
أَلَمhave you not تَرَseen إِنَّماonly الدُنياthe world حُطامٌdebris
تَوَقَّدُblaze up بَينَناamong us فيهاin it الحُروبُwars
Have you not seen that this world is only debris,
Where wars are kindled among us?
إِذاif نافَستَyou compete فيهِfor it كَساكَit clothes you ذُلّاًhumiliation
وَمَسَّكَand touches you فيin مُطالِبِهِits pursuits اللُغوبُweariness
If you compete for it, it clothes you in humiliation,
And weariness overtakes you in pursuing it.
أَراكَI see you تَغيبُyou go away ثُمَّthen تَأوبُyou return يَوماًone day
وَيوشِكُand soon أَنthat تَغيبَyou go away وَلاand not تَأوبُyou return
I see you go away, then return one day;
And soon you will go away and not return.
أَتَطلُبُdo you seek صاحِباًa companion لاno عَيبَflaw فيهِin him
وَأَيُّand which of الناسِpeople لَيسَis not لَهُfor him عُيوبُflaws
Do you seek a companion without a flaw?
And who among people has no flaws?
رَأَيتُI have seen الناسَpeople صالِحُهُمthe righteous among them قَليلٌfew
وَهُمand they وَاللَهُand God مَحمودٌis praised ضُروبُvarious kinds
I have seen people: the righteous among them are few,
And they are of many kinds—God be praised.
وَلَستُand I am not مُسَمِّياًcalling بَشَراًa mortal وَهوباًa bountiful giver
وَلَكِنَّbut الإِلَهَGod هُوَHe الوَهوبُthe Bountiful Giver
And I call no mortal a bountiful giver,
But God—He is the Bountiful Giver.
فَحاشَso far be لِرَبِّناfor our Lord عَنfrom كُلِّevery نَقصٍimperfection
وَحاشَand far be it لِسائِليهِfor those who ask Him أَنthat يَخيبواthey be disappointed
So far be our Lord from every imperfection,
And far be it that those who ask Him should be disappointed.
