طَلَبتُI sought أَخاًa brother فيin اللَهِGod فيin الغَربِthe West وَالشَرقِand the East
فَأَعوَزَنيyet eluded me هَذاthis عَلىdespite كَثرَةِthe multitude of الخَلقِpeople
I sought a brother in God in the West and the East,
yet this eluded me, despite the multitude of people.
فَصِرتُso I became وَحيداًalone بَينَهُمamong them مُتَسَبِّراًpatiently enduring
عَلىin the face of الغَدرِtreachery مِنهُمfrom them وَالمَلالَةَand weariness وَالمَذقَand insincerity
So I became alone among them, patiently enduring
their treachery, their weariness, and their insincerity.
أَرىI see مَنone who بِهاin it يَقضيjudges عَلَيَّagainst me لِنَفسِهِfor himself
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see مَنanyone who يَرعىshows consideration عَلَيَّfor me وَلاnor يُبقيspares
I see those in it who judge against me for their own sake,
and I have seen none who shows me consideration or spares me.
وَكَمand how many مِنof أَخٍa brother قَدindeed ذُقتُهُI have tasted him ذاpossessing بَشاشَةٍcheerfulness
إِذاwhen ساغَhe goes down easily فيin عَينيmy eye يَغَصُّchokes بِهِon him حَلقيmy throat
And many a brother, all smiles, have I tasted:
when my eye finds him palatable, my throat chokes on him.
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see كَالدُنياlike the world وَكَشفيand my probing لِأَهلِهاof its people
فَماso not انكَشَفواthey revealed themselves ليto me عَنas possessing وَفاءٍloyalty وَلاnor صِدقِhonesty
And I have seen nothing like this world; when I probed its people,
they revealed to me neither loyalty nor honesty.
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see أَمراًa thing واحِداًsingle مِنamong أُمورِهاits affairs
أَعَزَّmore precious وَلاnor أَعلىloftier مِنَthan الصَبرِpatient endurance لِلحَقِّfor the truth
And I have seen not a single thing among its affairs
more precious or loftier than patient endurance for the truth.
