ماذاwhat تَزَوَّدتَhave you laid up as provisions لِلرَحيلِfor departure
O you who will dwell in the grave before long,
what provisions have you laid up for departure?

and of might and strength—the Majestic.

We have indeed made our home in a dwelling
where we are but wayfarers.

A dwelling of pain, where one sufferer never ceases
complaining of its harm to another sufferer.

مِنin the form of مَنزِلٍa dwelling مُقفِرِdeserted مُحيلِlong-abandoned
How many witnesses to its coming end:
deserted, long-abandoned dwellings!

How many who sheltered in the shade of royal power
were driven from its deep shade!
لاno بُدَّescape لِلمُلكِfor royal power مِنfrom زَوالٍpassing away
عَنfrom مُستَدالٍthe vanquished إِلىto مُديلِthe victor
Royal power must inevitably pass
from the vanquished to the victor.

How many people Time has left
crying out in woe and lamentation!

How many a night's rest has Time embittered,
upon a bed—and many a midday rest!
كَمhow many قَتَلَkilled الدَهرُTime مِنof أُناسٍpeople
مَضَواpassed away وَكَمand how many غالَcarried off مِنof قَبيلِa tribe
How many people Time has slain,
now departed—and how many a tribe it has carried off!
هَيهاتَimpossible لِلأَرضِfor the earth مِنany عَزيزٍa mighty one
يَبقىendures عَلَيهاupon it وَلاnor ذَليلِa lowly one
Never shall the earth have a mighty one
who endures upon it, nor a lowly one!
ياO عَجَباًhow strange مِنat جُمودِthe dryness of عَينٍan eye
لَمnot تَعرَbeen free مِنof حادِثٍa calamity جَليلِgrave
How strange, the dryness of an eye
that has never been free of grave calamity!
كَأَنَّنيas though I لَمnot أُصَبbeen bereaved بِإِلفٍof a loved one
وَلاnor قَرينٍa close companion وَلاnor دَخيلِa confidant
As though I had never been bereaved of a loved one,
nor a close companion, nor a confidant,
وَلاnor رَفيقٍa companion وَلاnor صَديقٍa friend
وَلاnor شَفيقٍa caring friend وَلاnor عَديلِa peer
nor a companion, nor a friend,
nor a caring friend, nor a peer.
