أَياO إِخوَتيmy brothers آجالُناour appointed ends تَتَقَرَّبُdraw near
وَنَحنُand we مَعَwith اللاهينَthe heedless نَلهوwe amuse ourselves وَنَلعَبُand we play
O my brothers, our appointed ends draw near,
O my brothers, our lives draw near their end
And we, among the heedless, amuse ourselves and play.
While we amid the heedless ones rejoice and sport.
أُعَدِّدُI number أَيّاميmy days وَأُحصيand I tally حِسابَهاtheir count
وَماyet how great غَفلَتيmy heedlessness عَمّاof what أَعُدُّI count وَأَحسُبُand I reckon
I number my days and tally their count,
I count my days and reckon up their sum,
Yet how heedless I am of what I count and reckon!
Yet my forgetfulness proceeds to count and reckon.
غَداًtomorrow أَناI مِنthan ذاthis اليَومِday أَدنىnearer إِلىto الفَناdeath
وَبَعدَand after غَدٍtomorrow أَدنىnearer إِلَيهِto it وَأَقرَبُand closer
Tomorrow I shall be nearer to death than I am today,
Tomorrow I shall be yet nearer to decay
And the day after tomorrow, nearer to it and closer still.
And drawing after that yet nearer to decay.
