    Behold, death has a cup—what a cup!

And you must sip from its cup.

How long, when the final return is near,

will you remind others of that return while you yourself forget?

And how many a lesson have you lived through,

at which iron softens, yet you remain hard!

What strength makes you think you will not wear away,

when the firmly rooted mountains have worn away with time?

And not all suppositions prove true,

nor is every sound judgment based on analogy.

And every rain-promising cloud raised before the eye

has two faces: hope and despair.

And in goodness of heart lies all comfort,

and in malice of heart lies all distress.

And no one harboring envy and oppression

    can escape them both unscathed.

And there is nothing you are likelier to find

scarce than a trustworthy, supportive brother.

And you are never without turns of fortune to behold,

passing from one people to another.
