أَلاbehold إِنَّindeed ليfor me يَوماًa day أُدانُI shall be requited كَماas دِنتُI have dealt
سَيُحصيwill tally كِتابيmy record ماwhat أَسَأتُI did wrong وَأَحسَنتُand I did good
Behold, a day awaits me when I shall be requited as I have dealt.
Alas! I have a day when I will be judged as I have judged
My record will tally the wrong and the good I have done.
My record will tally what I did right and wrong
أَماindeed وَالَّذيby Him who أَرجوهُI hope in Him لِلعَفوِfor pardon إِنَّهُindeed, He
لَيَعلَمُsurely knows ماwhat أَسرَرتُI concealed مِنّيof myself وَأَعلَنتُand I revealed
Indeed, by Him whose pardon I hope for, He
By Him I hope for pardon, He knows
surely knows what I have concealed within me and revealed.
What I have concealed and what I have made known
كَفىit suffices حَزَناًsorrow أَنّيthat I أُحَسِّنُI beautify وَالبِلىwhile decay
يُقَبِّحُmakes ugly ماwhat زَيَّنتُI adorned مِنّيof myself وَحَسَّنتُand I beautified
It is sorrow enough that I beautify myself, while decay
It is sorrow enough that I do good yet decay
makes ugly what I have adorned and beautified in myself.
Makes ugly what I have adorned and made fair
وَأَعجَبُand more astonishing مِنthan هَذاthis هَناتٌtrifles تَغُرُّنيbeguile me
تَيَقَّنتُI became certain مِنهُنَّabout them الَّذيwhat قَدindeed تَيَقَّنتُI became certain
And stranger than this are trifles that beguile me,
More wondrous still, desires entice me
though I know for certain about them what I know for certain.
And I am certain of that which I have made certain
تَصَعَّدتُI ascended مُغتَرّاًdeluded وَصَوَّبتُand I descended فيin المُنىhopes
وَحَرَّكتُand I stirred مِنfrom نَفسيmy soul إِلَيهاtoward them وَسَكَّنتُand I stilled
Deluded, I have risen and descended amid my hopes,
I climbed aspiring and aimed at wishes
and stirred my soul toward them, and stilled it.
And stirred in myself hopes towards them and calmed them
وَكَمand how often قَدindeed دَعَتنيcalled me هِمَّتيmy ambition فَأَجَبتُهاso I answered it
وَكَمand how often لَوَّثَتنيdefiled me هِمَّتيmy ambition فَتَلَوَّثتُso I became defiled
And how often my ambition has called me, and I have answered it.
And how often my ambitions called me and I responded
And how often my ambition has defiled me, and I have been defiled.
And how often my ambitions soiled me and I was soiled
مُعاشَرَةُassociation with الإِنسانِa person عِنديin my view أَمانَةٌa trust
فَإِنso if خُنتُI betrayed إِنساناًa person فَنَفسيthen it is myself الَّذيwhom خُنتُI betrayed
To me, association with another person is a trust;
A man's company seems to me a trust
for if I betray a person, it is myself that I betray.
So if I betray a man, it is myself whom I betray
وَليand for me ساعَةٌan hour لاno شَكَّdoubt فيهاabout it وَشيكَةٌimminent
كَأَنِّيَas though I قَدalready حُنِّطتُI was perfumed for burial فيهاin it وَكُفِّنتُand I was shrouded
And an hour awaits me, beyond doubt, close at hand,
And I have an hour, of that there is no doubt, it is imminent
as though I had already been perfumed for burial and shrouded in it.
As if I will already have been embalmed and shrouded in it
أَلَمdid you not تَرَsee أَنَّthat الأَرضَthe earth مَنزِلُa dwelling قُلعَةٍimpermanence
وَإِنand even if طالَgrew long تَعميريmy lifespan عَلَيهاupon it وَأَزمَنتُand I lingered long
Have you not seen that the earth is a temporary dwelling,
Do you not see that the earth is a place of temporary lodging
even if my life upon it is prolonged and I linger long?
However long I last and take up residence in it?
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَرَهنٌsurely a captive بِالخُطوبِby calamities مُصَرَّفٌbuffeted
وَمُنتَظِرٌand awaiting كَأسَthe cup of الرَدىdeath حَيثُماwherever كُنتُI may be
And indeed I am a captive, buffeted by calamities,
I am hostage to misfortunes, transferred about
and awaiting the cup of death wherever I may be.
Waiting for the cup of departure wherever I may be
