أَلَمhave ... not? تَرَyou see أَنَّthat الحَقَّthe truth أَبلَجُradiant لائِحُmanifest
وَأَنَّand that لَجاجاتِobstinate disputes النُفوسِof souls جَوائِحُcalamities
Have you not seen that truth is radiant and manifest,
and that souls' obstinate disputes are calamities?
إِذاif المَرءُthe man لَمnot يَكفُفwithhold عَنِfrom الناسِpeople شَرَّهُhis evil
فَلَيسَthen there is no لَهُfor him ماas long as عاشَhe lives مِنهُمamong them مُصالِحُone making peace
If a man does not withhold his evil from people,
then none among them will be at peace with him as long as he lives.
إِذاif كَفَّrefrains عَبدُthe servant of اللَهِGod عَمّاfrom what يَضُرُّهُharms him
وَأَكثَرَand increases ذِكرَremembrance of اللَهِGod فَالعَبدُthen the servant صالِحُrighteous
If God's servant refrains from what harms him
and often remembers God, then that servant is righteous.
إِذاif العَبدُthe servant لَمnot يَمدَحهُpraise him حُسنُthe goodness of فِعالِهِhis deeds
فَلَيسَthen there is no لَهُfor him وَالحَمدُand praise لِلَّهِto God مادِحُone who praises
If the goodness of a servant's deeds does not praise him,
then, praise be to God, he has no one to praise him.
إِذاif ضاقَis constricted صَدرُthe breast of المَرءِthe man لَمnot يَصفُbecome serene عَيشُهُhis life
وَماand not يَستَطيبُfinds sweet العَيشَlife إِلّاexcept المُسامِحُthe forgiving person
If a man's breast is constricted, his life will not be serene,
and only the forgiving find life sweet.
وَبَيناand while الفَتىthe young man وَالمُلهِياتُand diversions يُذِقنَهُthey give him a taste
جَنىthe fruit of اللَهوِamusement إِذsuddenly قامَتstood عَلَيهِover him النَوائِحُthe wailing women
And while diversions give the young man a taste
of pleasure's fruit, suddenly the wailing women stand over him.
وَإِنَّand indeed امرَأًa man أَصفاكَsincerely offers you فيfor the sake of اللَهِGod وُدَّهُhis affection
وَكانَand is عَلىin التَقوىpiety مُعيناًa helper لِصالِحُsurely righteous
And a man who offers you sincere affection for God's sake
and helps you in piety is surely righteous.
وَإِنَّand indeed أَلَبَّthe wisest of الناسِpeople مَنthe one who كانَis هَمُّهُhis concern
بِماwith what شَهِدَتbore witness مِنهُof him عَلَيهِagainst him الجَوارِحُthe limbs
And the wisest of people is he whose concern
is with the deeds his limbs bear witness to against him.
