I forgot my death and deceived myself,

and long have I spent building and planting.

And every precious thing I now pay dearly

for will be sold at a loss after I am gone.

And I do not know, though I hope to live on:

perhaps, when I reach morning, I shall not reach evening.

And the hour of my death—there is no escaping it—

hastens my departure and ends my confinement.

    وَتَحضُرُ وَحشَتي وَيغيبُ أُنسي

    I die, and my loved ones loathe being near me;

and my loneliness comes, and my comfort disappears.

Take heed, O dweller in the adorned house:

death will lodge you in the belly of a grave.

I have seen you speak of this world often,

and frequent mention of it hardens the heart.

As though you see no loss among humankind,

yet you see it at every sunrise.

And many a seeker of a goal has grown weary and failed,

while another attains a goal with a gentle touch.

Indeed, seldom do you meet a grieving soul

whose sorrow fades except through consolation.
