ماwhat ليwith me أُفَرِّطُI neglect فيماin what يَنبَغيought to be done ماليwhat is wrong with me?
إِنّيindeed I لَأُغبَنُI am surely cheated إِدباريmy retreat وَإِقباليand my advance
Why do I neglect what I ought to do? What is wrong with me?
Indeed, I am cheated in my retreat and my advance.
اليَومَtoday أَلعَبُI play وَالأَيّامُand the days مُسرِعَةٌhastening
فيin هَدمِtearing down عُمريmy life وَفيand in تَصريفِchanging أَحواليmy circumstances
Today I play, while the days hasten
To tear down my life and change my circumstances.
يَجريrun on الجَديدانِnight and day وَالأَقدارُand fates بَينَهُماbetween the two of them
تَغدوgo forth at dawn وَتَسريand travel by night بِأَرزاقٍwith sustenance وَآجالِand appointed lifespans
The ever-renewed pair, night and day, run on; between them, fates
Go forth at dawn and travel by night with sustenance and appointed lifespans.
ياO مَنyou who سَلاceased to pine عَنfor حَبيبٍa beloved بَعدَafter غَيبَتِهِhis absence
كَمhow many بَعدَafter مَوتِكَyour death مِنof ناسٍone who forgets وَمِنand of سالِone who ceases to grieve
O you who ceased to pine for a beloved once he was gone,
How many, after your death, will forget you and cease to grieve!
كَأَنَّas though كُلَّevery نَعيمٍdelight أَنتَyou ذائِقُهُtasting it
مِنof لَذَّةِthe pleasure العَيشِof life يَحكيresembles لَمعَةَthe gleam الآلِof the mirage
It is as though every delight you taste
Of life's pleasures resembles the gleam of a mirage.
لاdo not تَلعَبَنَّever toy بِكَwith you الدُنياthe world وَأَنتَwhile you تَرىsee
ماwhatever شِئتَyou wish مِنof عِبَرٍlessons فيهاin it وَأَمثالِand examples
Never let the world toy with you, while you see
As many lessons and examples in it as you could wish.
الغَيُّerror فيin ظُلمَةٍdarkness وَالرُشدُand right guidance فيin صُوَرٍforms
مُسَربَلاتٍrobed بِإِحسانٍin goodness وَإِجمالِand beauty
Error lies in darkness, and right guidance in forms
Robed in goodness and beauty.
وَالقَولُand speech أَبلَغُهُits most eloquent ماthat which كانَwas أَصدَقَهُits truest
وَالصِدقُand truthfulness فيin مَوقِفٍa station مُستَسهَلٍeasily reached عالِlofty
And the most eloquent speech is the truest,
And truthfulness holds a lofty, easily reached station.
لَنwill not يُصلِحَreform النَفسَthe soul إِنif كانَتit is مُصَرَّفَةًsubject to change
إِلّاexcept التَنَقُّلُpassing مِنfrom حالٍa state إِلىto حالِa state
Nothing will reform the soul, if it is subject to change,
Except passing from one state to another.
فَنَحمَدُso we praise اللَهَGod ماnot نَنفَكُّwe break free مِنfrom نُقَلٍchanges
كُلٌّeveryone إِلىtoward المَوتِdeath فيin حَلٍّresting وَتَرحالِand journeying
So we praise God; we are never free of changes;
All are bound for death, whether resting or journeying.
وَالشَيبُand gray hair يَنعىannounces the death of إِلىto المَرءِa person الشَبابَyouth كَماjust as
يَنعىannounces the death of الأَنيسَthe companion إِلَيهِto him المَنزِلُthe dwelling الخاليempty
And gray hair announces youth's death to a man, just as
The empty dwelling announces his companion's death to him.
لَأَظعَنَنَّI shall surely depart إِلىto دارٍan abode خُلِقتُI was created لَهاfor it
وَخَيرُand the best زاديmy provision إِلَيهاto it خَيرُthe best أَعماليmy deeds
I shall surely depart for an abode for which I was created,
And my best provision for it is the best of my deeds.
ماnot حيلَةُrecourse المَوتِagainst death إِلّاexcept كُلُّevery صالِحَةٍrighteous deed
أَوor لاnot فَلاthen no حيلَةٌrecourse فيهِagainst it لِمُحتالِfor a schemer
There is no recourse against death but every righteous deed;
Otherwise, no schemer has any recourse against it.
وَالمَرءُand a person ماas long as عاشَhe lives يَجريhe runs لَيسَis not غايَتُهُhis end
إِلّاexcept مُفارَقَةًseparation لِلأَهلِfrom family وَالمالِand wealth
And man runs on as long as he lives; his end is nothing
But separation from family and wealth.
إِنّيindeed I لَآمُلُI surely hope وَالأَحداثُwhile events دائِبَةٌunceasing
فيin نَشرِspreading يَأسِdespair وَفيand in تَقريبِbringing nearer آمالِhopes
Indeed, I hope, while events work unceasingly
To spread despair and bring hopes nearer.
