أَصبَحتِyou have entered the morning ياO دارَabode الأَذىof harm
وَصَفاكِand your purity مُمتَلِئٌfilled with قَذىspecks of dirt
Morning finds you, O abode of harm,
You have become, O house of sorrow
And your purity is filled with specks of dirt.
And your description is filled with misery
أَينَwhere الَّذينَthose whom عَهِدتُهُمI knew them
قَطَعواthey spent الحَياةَlife تَلَذُّذاtaking pleasure
Where are those I once knew,
Where are those I knew
Who spent their lives in pleasure?
Who enjoyed the sweetest life?
دَرَجواthey passed away غَداةَthe morning when رَماهُمُit struck them
رَيبُmisfortune الزَمانِof time فَأَنفَذاand pierced through
They passed away the morning they were struck
Fate struck them one morning
By time’s misfortune, which pierced them through.
And dispatched them promptly—
سَنَصيرُwe shall become أَيضاًalso مِثلَهُمlike them
عَمّاafter قَليلٍa short while هَكَذاlike this
We too shall become like them,
We shall also be like them
In a little while, just so.
In a little while, just so.
ياO هؤلاءِyou people تَفَكَّرواreflect
O you people, reflect:
O you people, think!
Whoever feeds goes forth toward death.
For death, you will tomorrow be food.
