How often winter comes, then summer,

and spring passes, and autumn comes,

and a passage from scorching heat into the shade,

while death’s arrow looms over you.

O you whose stay in this world is frail,

how long will procrastination deceive you?

How strange that a man abases himself before a creature,

though a loaf of bread each day suffices him.
