ماwhy لِلجَديدَينِwith the two ever-new ones (day and night) لاnot يَبلىwear out اِختِلافُهُماtheir alternation
وَكُلُّand every غَضٍّfresh جَديدٍnew فيهِماwithin them بالِworn out
Why does the alternation of the ever-new day and night never wear out,
While every fresh, new thing within them wears away?
ياO مَنyou who سَلاceased grieving عَنfor حَبيبٍa loved one بَعدَafter ميتَتِهِhis death
كَمhow many بَعدَafter مَوتِكَyour death أَيضاًalso عَنكَfor you مِنof سالِone who ceases grieving
O you who have ceased grieving for a loved one after his death,
How many, after your death, will likewise cease grieving for you!
كَأَنَّas though كُلَّevery نَعيمٍpleasure أَنتَyou ذائِقُهُtasting it
مِنfrom لَذَّةِthe pleasure of العَيشِlife يَحكيresembles لَمعَةَthe shimmer of الآلِthe mirage
It is as though every pleasure you taste
Among life's delights resembles the shimmer of a mirage.
لاdo not تَلعَبَنَّever toy بِكَwith you الدُنياthe world وَأَنتَwhile you تَرىsee
ماwhatever شِئتَyou wish مِنof عِبَرٍlessons فيهاwithin it وَأَمثالِand examples
Do not let the world toy with you while you see
All the lessons and examples you could wish for within it.
ماthere is no حيلَةُrecourse against المَوتِdeath إِلّاexcept كُلُّevery صالِحَةٍrighteous deed
أَوor لاnone فَماfor there is no حيلَةٌrecourse فيهِagainst it لِمُحتالِfor a schemer
There is no recourse against death but every righteous deed—
Or none at all: no schemer has any recourse against it.
