A person's bane is love of this world.

And a person transgresses whenever he grows rich.

Indeed, I have seen this world's consequences,

so I abandoned what I desire because of what I fear.

    فَإِذا جَميعُ جَديدِها يَبلى

    I pondered this world and its newness;

and behold, all that is new in it wears out.

And behold, all its affairs are successive turns

    among humankind, seldom enduring.

And I tested most of its people, and behold,

each person strives in his own affairs.

And I have tried, but found no means

more honorable than contentment, nor higher.

And I sought, but found no noble virtue

that raises its possessor higher than piety.

And I passed by the graves, yet did not

distinguish between the slave and the master.

    لَم يَخلُ صاحِبُها مِنَ البَلوى

    This world has never ceased to be troubled;

its inhabitant has never been free of affliction.

An abode of calamities and cares, and an abode

    of anguish, sorrows, and lamentation.

While a young man has some standing in it,

suddenly he lies cast beneath its dust.

    لا شَيءَ بَينَ النَعيِ وَالبُشرى

    Its evils follow upon its beauties;

nothing separates tidings of death from glad tidings.

And scarcely a day sees its sun rise

without your hearing of someone whose death is announced.

    Do not reproach time, for

time offers no amends to one who reproaches it.

And if you reproach time for what

it brings, you will seldom be content.

A person is certain of destiny, yet never

ceases to worry over what is provided for him.

A person has allotted sustenance; he does not die, even if

all creatures strive, before it is exhausted.

O builder of the house, making provision for it,

what have you done for your other abode?

And you who lay out soft beds, do not

neglect the bed of the great sleep.

Were you summoned, you would not respond to what

you are summoned to; so consider what you are summoned to.

Do you think you can count those you have seen among the

    living, and then seen dead?

So you will surely join the courtyard of the dead,

and surely dwell in the abode of the perished.

He whose worldly life has become his goal—

when will he attain the ultimate goal?

All our souls are in the hand of destruction,

and all that is built belongs to the hand of decay.

Do not be deceived by life's vicissitudes, for

    the vicissitudes spare no one.

    لا تَغبِطَن إِلّا أَخا التَقوى

    Do not envy a brother for a sin;

envy none but a pious brother.

Glory to Him whom nothing equals!

How many a sighted person has a blind heart!

Glory to Him who gave you abundance!

Glory to Him who gave you what He gave!

So if you understand, you will surely give thanks; and if

you give thanks, He has indeed enriched you and granted you possessions.

And if you weep for a journey made in haste

toward the graves, such a journey makes one weep.

And if you are content, you will surely attain what

holds wealth and the greatest ease.

And if you are pleased with time, it has already

pleased and angered fools before you.

And few are those whose character is pure,

and few those for whom life is untroubled.

And many a truthful person's jest has emerged

in a word, as though it were a viper.

    مُذ كانَ يُبصِرُ نورَهُ الأَعمى

    And truth is radiant, with no obscurity in it;

ever since it existed, even the blind have seen its light.

    فَليَرعَها بِأَصَحِّ ما يُرعى

    And a person is appointed guardian of his trust;

so let him guard it in the soundest way it can be guarded.

And as for sustenance, God has allotted us

a share of it, while we are absorbed in gathering it.

How astonishing! I marveled at one who seeks gold

that perishes, while he rejects all that endures.

Truly, happy and not wretched has been

the soul of a person content with what he is given.
