    A dweller whose dwelling endures?

Time gives no sign of such a thing.

We are in an abode where we are told

Of its decay by an eloquent speaker.

An abode of ill: no joy has endured

For anyone within it, nor has sorrow.

You see none of its inhabitants

Whom trials have not swayed within it.

What a wonder, those people who went before!

What a glaring loss they suffered!

They amassed worldly riches for others,

And built in it, yet did not dwell there.

They left it after becoming entangled

In grudges among themselves through love of it.

Every living being, at his death,

Has the shroud as his share of his wealth.

Indeed, as for a man's wealth, he has nothing

Of it but his good name.

He has nothing of what he leaves behind

Afterward, save the good he has done.

    كُلُّنا بِالمَوتِ مُرتَهَنُ

    Our souls are for God's cause;

All of us are held in pledge by death.
