أَتُحِبُّdo you love? الغَداةَthis morning عُتبَةَʿUtbah حَقّاtruly
Ahmad said to me, unaware of what ailed me:
Ahmad said to me, not knowing my inner thoughts,
"Do you truly love ʿUtbah this morning?"
"Do you truly love Utbah in the mornings?"
فَتَنَفَّستُso I sighed ثُمَّthen قُلتُI said نَعَمyes حُبlove (first fragment)

So I sighed, then said, "Yes—a love
So I took a breath and said "Yes, it is a love
that coursed through my veins, vein by vein."
That has coursed through my veins and made me sweat.
ياalas! لِدَمعيfor my tears عَدِمتُهُmay I be rid of it لَيسَdoes not يَرقاcease flowing

Alas for my tears—may I be rid of them!—they will not cease;
Oh, for my tears - I have not held them back,
they only pour forth, stream after stream.
As he sets out at dusk and night descends.
لَوif تَجُسّينَyou feel by touch ياO عُتَيبَةُʿUtaybah قَلبيmy heart

If you were to feel my heart, O ʿUtaybah,
If you could see into my heart, Utbah,
you would find my heart a sore that has burst open.
You would find there an open wound, torn apart.

By my life, the doctor has grown weary, as have
my kin, of me because of what I suffer and endure.
My family, of what I suffer and endure.

Would that I die, and find some rest, for I
am forever, as long as I live, afflicted by her.
Will never be cured of her as long as I live.

I am her slave, admitting and confessing - no

One else holds me in chains but her, no other.

Devoted and caring, even though I am not
A counselor, compassionate, though I have not
granted freedom by her—and praise be to God.
Been granted freedom by her - and praise to God!"
