أَلَيسَis it not قَريباًnear كُلُّall ماthat which هُوَit آتِcoming
فَماso what ليfor me وَماand what لِلشَكِّfor doubt وَالشُبُهاتِand misgivings
Is not everything that is to come near?
Is not everything to come near?
So what have I to do with doubt and misgivings?
Then why do I have doubt and confusion?
أُنافِسُI compete فيfor طيبِthe goodness of الطَعامِthe food وَكُلُّهُand all of it
سَواءٌalike إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle جاوَزَhas passed beyond اللَهَواتِthe uvulas
I compete for fine food, yet all of it
I compete in fine foods though they
is alike once it has passed beyond the uvulas.
Are the same once past desires
وَأَسعىand I strive لِماfor what فَوقَbeyond الكَفافِsubsistence وَكُلَّماand whenever
تَرَفَّعتُI rose higher فيهِin it ازدَدتُI increased فيin الحَسَراتِregrets
And I strive for more than subsistence, and whenever
And I strive for more than enough, yet the more
I rise higher in it, my regrets increase.
I rise in it, the more I increase in regrets
وَأَطمَعُand I crave فيfor المَحياlife وَعَيشِيَand my life إِنَّماonly
مَسالِكُهُits paths مَوصولَةٌconnected بِمَماتِto death
And I crave life, yet my life has only
And I aspire to live long, but my
paths that are linked to death.
Paths are connected to deaths
وَلِلمَوتِand death has داعٍa caller مُسمِعٌmaking himself heard غَيرَexcept أَنَّنيthat I
أَرىI see الناسَpeople عَنaway from داعيهِits caller فيin غَفَلاتِlapses of heedlessness
And death has a caller who makes himself heard, yet I
And death has a caller the hearing do not hear
see people heedless of its caller.
I see people heedless of its caller
فَلِلَّهِso, to God عَقليmy reason إِنَّindeed عَقليmy reason لَناقِصٌtruly deficient
وَلَوand had تَمَّbeen complete عَقليmy reason لَاغتَنَمتُI would have made the most of حَياتيmy life
So, to God belongs my reason—my reason is indeed deficient.
So my mind, my incomplete mind
And had my reason been complete, I would have made the most of my life.
If complete I'd value my life
وَلِلَّهِand to God نَفسيmy soul إِنَّهاindeed it is لَبَخيلَةٌtruly miserly
عَلَيَّtoward me بِماwith what جادَتit gave generously بِهِwith it لَأُلاتِto [unclear as written]
And to God belongs my soul—it is indeed miserly
And my soul, it's so stingy
toward me with what it has generously given to [unclear in the supplied text].
To me with what it gave my kin
