كَأَنَّas though يَقينَناour certainty بِالمَوتِof death شَكٌّdoubt

وَماand no عَقلٌmind عَلىamid الشَهَواتِdesires يَزكوgrows pure
It is as though our certainty of death were doubt.
And no mind grows pure amid desires.

وَعِندَand among المُتَّقينَthe God-fearing لَهُنَّfor them تَركُrenunciation
We see desires prevailing over us,
But the God-fearing renounce them.

لَهُنَّtheirs بِمَنagainst whomever قَصَدنَthey aimed إِلَيهِtoward him فَتكُa deadly assault
We have amused ourselves while calamities pounce;
They deal death to whomever they target.

And in the graves, from among those given to amusement,
Lie hostages who neither escape nor are released.
وَلِلدُنياand this world has عِداتٌpromises بِالتَمَنّيthrough wishful thinking
وَكُلُّand all عِداتِهاits promises كَذِبٌlies وَإِفكٌand falsehood
And this world offers promises through wishful thinking,
And all its promises are lies and falsehood.

And no ruler's dominion endures,
And does any dominion survive the vicissitudes of time?

Behold, tomorrow humankind will indeed be decayed remains,
And indeed the earth, after them, will be crushed flat.
