إِنif كانَis لاno بُدَّescape مِنfrom مَوتٍdeath فَماthen why كَلَفيmy attachment
وَماand why عَنائيmy toil بِماover what يَدعوleads إِلىto الكُلَفِburdens
If death is inevitable, why this attachment of mine?
And why my toil over what brings burdens?
لاno شَيءَthing لِلمَرءِfor a man أَغنىmore enriching مِنthan قَناعَتِهِhis contentment
وَلاand no اِمتِلاءَsatiety لِعَينِfor the eye of المُلتَهيthe distracted one الطَرِفِthe restless one
Nothing makes a man richer than his contentment.
Nor is the eye of the distracted, restless man ever sated.
مَنwhoever فارَقَabandons القَصدَmoderation لَمnot يَأمَنis safe عَلَيهِagainst him هَوىًdesire
يَدعوleads إِلىto البَغيِoppression وَالعُدوانِand aggression وَالسَرَفِand excess
Whoever abandons moderation is not safe from desire
That leads to oppression, aggression, and excess.
ماnot كُلُّevery رَأيِopinion of الفَتىthe young man يَدعوleads إِلىto رَشَدٍright guidance
إِذاif بَداappears لَكَto you رَأيٌan opinion مُشكِلٌperplexing فَقِفِthen pause
Not every opinion a man holds leads to right guidance.
If a perplexing opinion occurs to you, pause.
أَخَيَّmy brother ماnot سَكَنَتfell still ريحٌa wind وَلاand not عَصَفَتraged
إِلّاexcept لِتُؤذِنَto give warning بِالنُقصانِof decline وَالتَلَفِand destruction
My brother, no wind has fallen still or raged
Except to herald decline and destruction.
ماhow أَقرَبَnear الحَينَdoom مِمَّنto one who لَمnot يَزَلceases بَطِراًarrogant in prosperity

وَلَمand not تَزَلceases نَفسُهُhis soul توفيstands aloft عَلىupon شَرَفِa height
How near doom is to one who remains arrogant in prosperity,
And whose soul forever stands upon a height.

How many a mighty man of great standing lies in a grave,
Laid low, shrouded in the earth's dust.
لِلَّهِto God أَهلُdwellers of قُبورٍgraves كُنتُI used to أَعهَدُهُمknow them

أَهلَdwellers of القِبابِthe domes الرُخامِيّاتِof marble وَالغُرَفِand chambers
To God belong the grave-dwellers whom I once knew
As dwellers of marble domes and chambers.
ياO مَنyou who تَشَرَّفَtake pride بِالدُنياin this world وَزينَتِهاand its adornment

O you who take pride in this world and its adornment,
Piety toward the Merciful is honor enough for a man.
وَالخَيرُand good وَالشَرُّand evil فيin التَصويرُdepiction بَينَهُماbetween them both
لَوif صُوِّراthey both were depicted لَكَfor you بَونٌa gulf غَيرُnot مُؤتَلِفِreconcilable
And between good and evil, in their portrayal,
If they were portrayed for you, there would be an irreconcilable gulf.

My dear brother, befriend the pure-hearted as much as you can, and do not
Ever savor brotherhood with a tainted brother.
ماnot يَحرُزُsafeguards المَرءُa man مِنof أَطرافِهِhis sides طَرَفاًa part
إِلّاexcept that تَخَوَّنَهُerodes him النُقصانُdecline مِنfrom طَرَفِa side
No man safeguards one part of himself
Without decline eating away at him from another side.
وَاللَهُand God يَكفيكَis enough for you إِنif أَنتَyou اِعتَصَمتَhold fast بِهِto Him
مَنwhoever يَصرِفِturns away اللَهُGod عَنهُfrom him السوءِevil يَنصَرِفِit departs
And God is enough for you, if you hold fast to Him.
From whomever God turns evil away, it departs.
الحَمدُpraise لِلَّهِto God شُكراًin gratitude لاno شَريكَpartner لَهُto Him

Praise be to God in gratitude; He has no partner.
Nothing is gained so well as through gentleness and kindness.
