أَتَدريdo you know أَيَّwhat ذُلٍّhumiliation فيin السُؤالِbegging
وَفيand in بَذلِoffering الوُجوهِfaces إِلىto الرِجالِmen
Do you know what humiliation lies in begging,
and in laying one's face before men?

Whoever upholds self-restraint gains honor through it,
and the upright man is self-sufficient without wealth.

If a gift comes at the cost of offering my face,
then may I never be brought near that gift.

يَكونُis الفَضلُthe favor فيهِin it عَلَيَّupon me لاnot ليto me
I seek refuge in God from a base disposition
in which a favor is owed by me, not to me.

Beware a hand that holds a favor over you,
for whoever extends it to you stands above you.

كَماjust as عَلَتِrose اليَمينُthe right hand عَلىabove الشِمالِthe left hand
A hand rises above another through a noble deed,
as the right hand rises above the left.

Life's conditions include abundance and hardship,
and what suffices you, and ample living within lawful bounds.

Do you deny that you are a brother to bliss,
while you spend summer in the shelter of shadows,

and you obtain your sustenance honorably,
and, if you thirst, your fill of clear water?

When will you pass the evening—and we the morning—at ease,
while, all your life, you are never content with any lot?

You toil to gather one thing after another,
yet seek to be at ease of mind.

And a little wealth may indeed serve the purpose
of much wealth in meeting one's needs.

If a little relieves my poverty,
and I find no abundance, I do not care.

Such is the world: I have seen love within it—
its aftermath is separation born of mutual loathing.

وَنَقصُكَand your decline أَنthat نَظَرتَyou looked إِلىat الهِلالِthe crescent moon
You rejoice when you look upon a crescent moon,
yet seeing that crescent marks your own decline.
