تَنَكَّبتُI shunned جَهليmy folly فَاستَراحَso found relief ذَوُوthose engaged in عَذليreproaching me
وَأَهمَدتُand I stilled غِبَّthe aftermath of العَذلِreproach حينَwhen انقَضىended جَهليmy folly
I shunned my folly, so those who reproached me found relief.
And I stilled the aftermath of reproach when my folly ended.
وَأَصبَحَand there came to be ليfor me فيin المَوتِdeath شُغلٌa concern عَنِaway from الصِباyouth
وَفيand in المَوتِdeath شُغلٌa concern شاغِلٌall-consuming لِذَويfor those possessing العَقلِreason
And death has become my concern, turning me from youthful pursuits.
And in death there is an all-consuming concern for those of reason.
إِذاif أَناI لَمnot أُشغَلam occupied بِنَفسيwith my own soul فَنَفسُthen the soul of مَنwhom
مِنَamong الناسِpeople أَرجوI hope أَنthat يَكونَbe بِهاwith it شُغليmy concern
If I am not concerned with my own soul, then whose soul
Among people do I hope to concern myself with?
وَإِنand if لَمnot يَكُنthere is عَقلٌreason يَصونُsafeguards أَمانَتيmy trustworthiness
وَعِرضيand my honor وَدينيand my faith ماas long as حَيِيتُI live فَماthen what فَضليmy merit
And if reason does not safeguard my trustworthiness,
And my honor and my faith as long as I live, what merit have I?
أَحِنُّI yearn إِلىfor الدُنياthis world حَنيناًwith longing كَأَنَّنيas though I
وَلَستُand I am not بِهاin it مُستَوفِزاًpoised to depart قَلِقَrestless الرَحلِthe saddle
I yearn for this world with such longing, as though I
Were not poised to leave it, restless in the saddle.
وَمَنand who ذاthat one عَلَيهاupon it لَيسَis not مُستَوحِشاًfeeling lonely بِهاin it
وَمُغتَرِباًand a stranger فيهاin it وَإِنand even if كانَhe is ذاpossessing أَهلِa family
And who upon it is not lonely there,
And a stranger in it, even if he has a family?
سَأَمضيI shall pass away وَمَنand whoever بَعديafter me فَغَيرُso not مُخَلَّدٍimmortal
كَماjust as لَمnot يُخَلَّدبَعدُbe granted immortality yet مَنwhoever قَدalready مَضىpassed away قَبليbefore me
I shall pass away, and whoever follows me will not live forever,
Just as none who passed before me has yet been granted immortality.
لَعَمرُكَby your life ماnot الدُنياthis world بِدارٍa home لِأَهلِهاfor its people
وَلَوand if عَقَلواthey understood كانواthey would be جَميعاًall together عَلىon رِجلِa foot
By your life, this world is no home for its people;
And had they understood, they would all be on their feet.
وَماand not تَبحَثُsearch الساعاتُthe hours إِلّاexcept عَنِfor البِلىdecay
وَلاnor تَنطَويfold up الأَيامُthe days إِلّاexcept عَلىupon ثُكلِbereavement
And the hours search for nothing but decay,
And the days fold over nothing but bereavement.
وَإِنّاand indeed we لَفيsurely in دارِthe abode of الفِراقِparting وَلَنand will not تَرَyou see
بِهاin it أَحَداًanyone ماas long as عاشَhe lives مُجتَمِعَgathered together الشَملِone's loved ones
And we are indeed in the abode of parting, and you will never see
Anyone there whose loved ones remain together throughout his life.
