لِلمَرءِ في الحِرصِ هِمَّةٌ عَجَبُ
Greed never enslaves one with good breeding.
A man's zeal in greed is a marvel.

from which neither non-Arabs nor Arabs have escaped.

if it is genuine, suffers harm or toil.

the whole earth, were it gold, would not suffice him.

his judgment never ceases to waver.

guarding against its hardships and keeping watch.

Whoever clings to rancor is ever grief-stricken;
sorrows drown him in their seas.

O you who fear death, you do not fear it,
and, by God, conceit and play are yours.

Beware of injustice: it is darkness.
Beware of suspicion: it is falsehood.

suddenly it is said: 'They have perished, decayed, and gone.'

your palace—the ages wear away its freshness.

مُصطَبِراًpatiently steadfast لِلحُقوقِfor obligations إِذwhen تَجِبُthey fall due
مُصطَبِراً لِلحُقوقِ إِذ تَجِبُ
Indeed, I have seen the noble man acknowledge
and patiently fulfill obligations when they fall due.

And I have known the base: they have no
loyalty, friendship, or honor.

Guard yourself against the base, for they
do not care what wrongs they commit against you.

دُلٌّ ذَليلٌ وَنِصفُهُ شَغَبُ
For half the character of the base, since they were created,
is servile bearing, and the other half is strife.

Flee from baseness and the base, and do not
draw near them, for they are scabies.
