This is an age in which people cling to

the pride of kings and the manners of the poor.

Do you not know—may God reward you with goodness

and grant you more good, O Ibn Yaqtin—

that, my father, I want you for this world and its immediate benefits,

not for religion on the Day of Judgment?

How long, I wonder, O Ibn Yaqtin,

will I praise you for something you do not bestow on me?

Indeed, greetings and cheerfulness from a man

in a position like yours are not enough for me.
