إِلَهيmy God لاdo not تُعَذِّبنيpunish me فَإِنّيfor indeed I
مُقِرٌّconfessing بِالَّذيto what قَدalready كانَoccurred مِنّيfrom me
My God, do not torment me, for I
My God, do not punish me, for I
confess to all that has come from me.
Confess to what I have done.
وَماand not ليfor me حيلَةٌrecourse إِلّاexcept رَجائيmy hope
وَعَفوُكَand Your pardon إِنif عَفَوتَYou pardon وَحُسنُand the goodness of ظَنّيmy expectation
No recourse have I except my hope,
And I have no recourse but my hope,
Your pardon—should You pardon—and my trust in You.
And Your pardon, if You pardon me, and my trust in Your goodness.
فَكَمso how many مِنof زِلَّةٍa lapse ليof mine فيamong البَراياhumankind
وَأَنتَand You عَلَيَّtoward me ذوpossessor of فَضلٍfavor وَمَنِّand bounty
How many a lapse of mine among creation,
How many a lapse of mine there is among humankind,
while You have shown me grace and favor.
Yet You show me favor and bounty.
إِذاwhen فَكَّرتُI thought فيabout نَدَميmy remorse عَلَيهاover it
عَضَضتُI bit أَنامِليmy fingertips وَقَرَعتُand I struck سِنّيmy tooth
Whenever I ponder my remorse over them,
When I think of my remorse for them,
I bite my fingertips and gnash my teeth.
I bite my fingertips and gnash my teeth.
يَظُنُّthink الناسُpeople بيof me خَيراًwell وَإِنّيand indeed I
لَشَرُّsurely the worst of الناسِpeople إِنif لَمnot تَعفُYou pardon عَنّيme
People think well of me, though I
People think well of me, yet I
would surely be the worst of people if You did not pardon me.
Am surely the worst of people if You do not pardon me.
أُجَنُّI go mad بِزَهرَةِover the bloom of الدُنياthis world جُنوناًmadness
وَأُفنيand I squander العُمرَlife فيهاin it بِالتَمَنّيthrough wishful longing
I am maddened by the blossom of this world—utterly mad,
I am utterly maddened by this world's bloom,
and squander my life in it on wishful dreams.
And squander my life in it on wishful longing.
وَبَينَand between يَدَيَّmy two hands مُحتَبَسٌa confinement طَويلٌlong
كَأَنّيas though I قَدalready دُعيتُI was summoned لَهُto it كَأَنّيas though I
And ahead of me lies a long confinement,
And ahead of me lies a long confinement,
as though I had already been summoned to it—as though I...
As though I have already been summoned to it—as though I...
وَلَوand if أَنّيthat I صَدَقتُI was sincere in الزُهدَrenunciation فيهاregarding it
قَلَبتُI would turn لِأَهلِهاtoward its people ظَهرَthe back of المِجَنِّthe shield
Had I been sincere in renouncing this world,
And if I were sincere in renouncing it,
I would have turned the shield’s back upon its people.
I would turn the back of the shield toward its people.
