أَمسىcame to be بِبَغدادَin Baghdad ظَبيٌa gazelle لَستُI do not أَذكُرُهُI recall him
إِلّاexcept that بَكَيتُI wept إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle ذِكرُهُthe memory of him خَطَراcame to mind
A gazelle is now in Baghdad; I never recall him
In Baghdad there was a gazelle I cannot forget
Without weeping whenever his memory comes to mind.
I weep whenever he comes to mind
إِنَّindeed المُحِبَّthe lover إِذاwhen شَطَّتlay far away مَنازِلُهُhis dwellings
عَنِfrom الحَبيبِthe beloved بَكىwept أَوor حَنَّyearned أَوor ذَكَراremembered
Indeed, when a lover’s dwellings lie far
When the dwellings of a lover are far from the beloved
From the beloved, he weeps, or yearns, or remembers.
He weeps, yearns, or remembers
ياoh رُبَّmany a لَيلٍnight طَويلٍlong بِتُّI spent the night أَرقُبُهُI watch it
حَتّىuntil أَضاءَshone عَمودُthe pillar of الصُبحِdawn فَاِنفَجَراand then burst forth
Oh, many a long night I spent watching it,
O Lord of a long night I stay up waiting
Until the pillar of dawn shone and burst forth.
Until the pillar of dawn shone and burst forth
ماnot كُنتُI was أَحسِبُI thought إِلّاexcept مُذsince عَرَفتُكُمُI knew you
أَنَّthat المَضاجِعَthe beds مِمّاamong what تُنبِتُproduce الإِبراneedles
I never thought, until I knew you,
I never thought, since I came to know you
That beds were among the things that grow needles.
That beds grow thorns
وَاللَيلُand the night أَطوَلُlonger مِنthan يَومِthe day of الحِسابِreckoning عَلىto
عَينِthe eye of الشَجِيِّthe sorrow-stricken one إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle نَومُهُhis sleep نَفَراfled
And night is longer than the Day of Reckoning to
And the night is longer than Judgement Day
The eye of the sorrow-stricken, when his sleep takes flight.
To the sleepless lover when his sleep is disturbed
