دارٌa dwelling وَعَورَةُroughness سَهلِهاits level ground
دارٌ وَعَورَةُ سَهلِها
شَمَلَتhas encompassed مَذاهِبَpaths أَهلِهاits inhabitants
شَمَلَت مَذاهِبَ أَهلِها
A dwelling—the roughness of its level ground
My land of steep hills
has encompassed the paths of its inhabitants.
Has encompassed the doctrines of its people
قَتّالَةٌa ruthless killer خَبَطَتhas struck جَميall (opening fragment)
قَتّالَةٌ خَبَطَت جَمي
عَcompletion of “all” العالَمينَthe world's people بِقَتلِهاwith its slaughter
عَ العالَمينَ بِقَتلِها
A ruthless killer, it has struck all
A killer that has confused all
the world's people with its slaughter.
The worlds with its killing
خَدّاعَةٌthoroughly deceitful بِغُرورِهاthrough its beguilement
خَدّاعَةٌ بِغُرورِها
وَبِنَقضِهاand through its unraveling وَبِفَتلِهاand through its twisting
وَبِنَقضِها وَبِفَتلِها
Deceitful through its beguilement,
A deceiver with its deceit
and through its unraveling and its twisting.
And with its violation and cunning
ياO مَنyou who عَلىupon الأَرضِthe earth اسمَعواhear
يا مَن عَلى الأَرضِ اسمَعوا
نَعيَannouncement of death الحَياةِlife لِأَهلِهاfor its people
نَعيَ الحَياةِ لِأَهلِها
O you upon the earth, hear
Oh you who are on earth, listen
life's announcement of death for its people.
To the obituary of its people
ياO مَنyou who عَلىupon الأَرضِthe earth افطَنواtake heed
يا مَن عَلى الأَرضِ افطَنوا
لِلحادِثاتِof calamities وَكَلهاand all of them
لِلحادِثاتِ وَكَلها
O you upon the earth, take heed
Oh you who are on earth, be aware
of calamities—all of them.
Of the events and all of them
أَعذَرتَyou have excused نَفسَكَyour soul ياO أُخَيmy dear brother (opening fragment)
أَعذَرتَ نَفسَكَ يا أُخَي
يَcompletion of “my dear brother” بِغَيّهاfor its waywardness وَبِجَهلِهاand for its ignorance
يَ بِغَيّها وَبِجَهلِها
You have excused your soul, O my dear
You have excused yourself, my brother
brother, for its waywardness and its ignorance.
With its ignorance and foolishness
وَرَضيتَand you have been content مِنهاfrom it فيin الَّذيthat which
وَرَضيتَ مِنها في الَّذي
تَأتيit does بِأَقبَحِwith the foulest of فِعلِهاits deeds
تَأتي بِأَقبَحِ فِعلِها
And you have accepted from it, in what
And you were satisfied with what it does
it does, the foulest of its deeds.
With its ugliest deeds
وَتَرَكتَهاand you have left it وَتَتَبُّعُand the pursuit of الشَthe desires (opening fragment)
وَتَرَكتَها وَتَتَبُّعُ الشَ
هواتِcompletion of “desires” أَكبَرُthe greatest شُغلِهاits occupation
هواتِ أَكبَرُ شُغلِها
And you have left it, the pursuit of
And you left it chasing
desires being its chief occupation.
Passions, its biggest preoccupation
لَمdid not تَنسَforget نَفسُكَyour soul يَومَهاits day
لَم تَنسَ نَفسُكَ يَومَها
إِلّاexcept لِقِلَّةِbecause of the lack of عَقلِهاits reason
إِلّا لِقِلَّةِ عَقلِها
Your soul did not forget its day
Your soul has not forgotten itself
except because of its lack of reason.
Except for its lack of intellect
كَمhow many عِبرَةٍa lesson لَكَfor you فيin المُلوthe kings (opening fragment)
كَم عِبرَةٍ لَكَ في المُلو
كِcompletion of “kings” وَفيand in تَفَرُّقِthe sundering of شَملِهاtheir unity
كِ وَفي تَفَرُّقِ شَملِها
How many lessons you have in the
How many lessons for you
kings, and in the sundering of their unity!
In the fate of kings and the disunity of their rule
إِنَّindeed الحَوادِثَcalamities رُبَّماmay sometimes
إِنَّ الحَوادِثَ رُبَّما
قَصَدَتheaded إِلَيكَtoward you بِنَبلِهاwith their arrows
قَصَدَت إِلَيكَ بِنَبلِها
Indeed, calamities may sometimes
Indeed calamities may sometimes
come at you with their arrows.
Aim at you with their arrows
فَإِذاso when رَمَتكَthey shot at you بِنَبلَةٍwith an arrow
فَإِذا رَمَتكَ بِنَبلَةٍ
كَرَّتthey charged again عَلَيكَagainst you بِمِثلِهاwith its like
كَرَّت عَلَيكَ بِمِثلِها
So when they shoot an arrow at you,
And if an arrow hits you
they charge at you again with another like it.
It will strike you back with its like
