    My wonder never ceases at one—

    What ails him? If asked a favor, he grieves.

    فَهُوَ المَغبونُ لَو كانَ فَطِن

    A miser's stinginess harms no one but himself;

    For he is the loser—if only he understood.

    فَكَأَنَّ المَوتَ قَد حَلَّ كَأَن

    O brother of the world, prepare for decay;

    For death seems already to have arrived—so it seems.

    How long, how much longer, will you be on a swing,

    Wishing for one span of time after another?

    And whenever you sway amid wishes,

    You expose yourself to temptations that lead astray.

    How admirable is man—how noble he is!

    Whoever does wrong is forsaken, and whoever does good is helped.

    Many a loss of hope has driven wishes away from you,

    So the heart found rest from them and grew still.

    وَإِذا عَزَّ صَديقُكَ فَهُن

    Be gentle with people when they grow angry;

    And when your friend grows unyielding, be yielding.

    And when a man purifies his sincerity,

    His outward appearance accords with what is hidden within.

    And when a man's piety becomes pure,

    His goodness is both hidden and manifest.

    I marvel at one who is at ease and secure,

    Who has made the world his home, though it is no home.
