سَتَرَ القَبيحَ وَأَظهَرَ الحَسَنا
Praise be to God, who deals gently with us,
[Praise] be to God, who is gentle with us;
concealing what is ugly and revealing what is fair.
He concealed what is ugly and revealed what is beautiful.
ماnot تَنقَضيcome to an end عَنّاfrom us لَهُbelonging to Him مِنَنٌfavors

حَتّى يُجَدِّدَ ضِعفَها مِنَنا
His favors toward us never come to an end
His favors toward us do not come to an end
before He renews them twofold as blessings.
before He renews them with twice as many favors.

Had I devoted myself to thanking Him for that,
Had I concerned myself with gratitude for that, I would not
I would not have become enthralled by pleasures.
have become enthralled by pleasures.

I have made my home in a dwelling that cannot last,
I settled in an abode that cannot endure;
one that promises delusion and brings forth filth.
it promises delusion and brings forth filth.

Its occupant’s joy scarcely becomes apparent
Scarcely does its inhabitant’s joy appear
before that joy of his turns into sorrow.
before his joy turns to sorrow.

How strange she is—no, stranger still is her...
How astonishing it is—no, rather, its inhabitant, the
deluded inhabitant: how can he count her a homeland?
deluded one! How can he deem it a homeland?

While one dwelling there is secure,
While the one dwelling there felt secure
among his family, suddenly it is said: “He has departed.”
among his family, suddenly it was said: “He has departed.”
