خَليلَيَّmy two friends إِنif لَمnot يَغتَفِرforgive كُلُّeach واحِدٍone
عِثارَstumbles أَخيهِhis brother مِنكُماof you two فَتَرافَضاthen you two part ways
My two companions, if each of you will not forgive
My two friends, if each of you does not forgive
his brother’s stumble, then go your separate ways.
his brother's stumbles, then part ways.
وَماand not يَلبَثُtakes long الحِبّانَthe two loving friends إِنif لَمnot يِجَوِّزاthey both overlook
كَثيراًmuch مِنَof المَكروهِwhat is disliked أَنto يَتَباغَضاthey hate one another
Nor will two lovers remain so for long, if they do not overlook
And two loving friends will soon—unless they overlook
much that displeases them, before they come to hate one another.
much that displeases them—come to hate one another.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends بابُdoor الفَضلِvirtue أَنto تَتَواهَباyou two pardon one another
كَماjust as أَنَّthat بابَdoor النَقصِshortcoming أَنto تَتَقارَضاyou two trade reproaches
My two companions, the gate of virtue is to give freely to each other,
My two friends, the door to virtue is to pardon one another,
just as the gate of deficiency is to deal in debts with each other.
just as the door to moral failing is to trade reproaches.
