Have you not seen this death sweeping through creation?
Have you not seen how death parades all creatures?
Do you see anyone who lives on, that you should hope to live on?
You see no one remain so you would hope to remain.

إِلى المُنتَهى وَاجعَل مَطِيَّتَكَ الصِدقا
Take provisions from this world, for you are departing
Stock up from this life, for you are heading
To the final destination, and make truthfulness your mount.
To the final goal; make truthfulness your steed,
وَأَمسِكand keep مِنَfrom الدُنياthis world الكَفافَenough to subsist on وَجُدand be generous عَلىto

أَخيكَ وَخُذ بِالرِفقِ وَاجتَنِبِ الخُرقا
And keep from this world only what suffices, and be generous to
Take from this life what suffices you; be good
Your brother; hold to gentleness and shun harshness.
To your brother; take the gentle way; leave the rugged.
فَإِنّيfor indeed I رَأَيتُhave seen المَرءَa person يُحرَمُis deprived of حَظَّهُhis share

مِنَof الدينِreligion وَالدُنياand this world إِذاwhen حُرِمَhe is deprived of الرِفقاgentleness
مِنَ الدينِ وَالدُنيا إِذا حُرِمَ الرِفقا
For I have seen a person deprived of his share
For I have seen a man deprived of his share
Of religion and this world when deprived of gentleness.
Of religion and life when deprived of gentle care.
وَلاand do not تَجعَلَنَّever give الحَمدَpraise إِلّاexcept لِأَهلِهِto those deserving it

وَلا تَدَعِ الإِمساكَ بِالعُروَةِ الوُثقى
And never give praise except to those who deserve it;
Do not restrict all praise to those unworthy;
And do not abandon holding fast to the firmest handhold.
Do not abandon holding fast to the secure handhold.

And there is no good in one who does not help others with his surplus,
No good in one who does not give generously of his bounty,
And there is no good in one whose face is not seen to be cheerful.
No good in one whose face is never cheerful and friendly.

And a young man does not fall short in virtue,
A man is not deficient in merit
If he fears the Most Merciful and follows the truth.
If he fears the Merciful and follows the truth.
