كَأَنas though قَدalready عَجَّلَhastened الأَقوامُthe people غَسلَكwashing you
وَقامَand rose الناسُthe people يَبتَدِرونَthey rush to حَملَكcarrying you
It is as though the people have already hastened your washing,
It seems the people hastened your burial
And the people have risen, rushing to carry you,
And the folks rushed to carry your bier
وَنُجِّدَand was furnished بِالثَرىwith earth لَكَfor you بَيتُa house هَجرٍof abandonment
وَأَسرَعَتِand hastened الأَكُفُّthe hands إِلَيهِto it نَقلَكcarrying you
And a house of abandonment has been furnished for you with earth,
A house of estrangement was built with soil
And hands have hurried to carry you into it,
And palms rushed to transport you there
وَأَسلَمَكَand abandoned you اِبنُthe son عَمِّكَof your paternal uncle فيهِin it فَرداًalone
وَأَرسَلَand released مِنfrom يَدَيهِhis two hands أَخوكَyour brother حَبلَكyour rope
And your paternal cousin has left you there alone,
Your cousin surrendered you to it alone
And your brother has released your rope from his hands,
While your brother sent ahead of him your rope
وَحاوَلَتِand sought القُلوبُthe hearts سِواكَsomeone other than you ذِكراًremembrance
أَنِسنَthey found comfort بِوَصلِهِin his companionship وَنَسينَand forgot وَصلَكyour companionship
And hearts have sought someone other than you to remember,
And hearts tried to recall others besides you
They have found comfort in his companionship and forgotten yours,
Befriending his union, forgetting your bond
وَصارَand became الوارِثونَthe heirs وَأَنتَwhile you صِفرٌempty-handed
مِنَof الدُنياthis world لِمالِكَover your wealth مِنكَthan you أَملَكmore in control
And the heirs have become—while you have nothing
And the heirs reaped while you were made barren
Of this world—more in control of your wealth than you.
Of the world belonging to you that they seized
إِذاif لَمnot تَتَّخِذyou prepare لِلمَوتِfor death زاداًprovisions
وَلَمand not تَجعَلyou make بِذِكرِwith remembrance of المَوتِdeath شُغلَكyour concern
If you have not prepared provisions for death,
If you do not prepare provisions for death
And have not made remembrance of death your concern,
Or make remembering death your preoccupation
فَقَدthen indeed ضَيَّعتَyou squandered حَظَّكَyour share يَومَon the day تُدعىyou are summoned
وَأَصلَكَand your lineage حينَwhen تَنسُبُهُyou trace it وَفَضلَكand your merit
Then you have squandered your share on the day you are summoned,
Then you have squandered your share when called
And your lineage, when you trace it, and your merit.
And origin when it enumerates your nobility
أَراكَI see you تَغُرُّكَdeceive you الشَهَواتُdesires قِدماًsince long ago
وَكَمand how many قَدalready غَرَّتِhave deceived الشَهَواتِdesires مِثلَكones like you
I see that desires have long been deceiving you,
I see desires delude you forward
And how many like you have desires already deceived!
And how many desires have deluded the likes of you
أَماindeed وَلَتَذهَبَنَّand will surely go away بِكَwith you المَناياthe fates of death
كَماjust as ذَهَبَتwent away بِمَنwith those who قَدalready كانَwere قَبلَكbefore you
Indeed, death will surely carry you away,
But death will surely take you away
As it carried away those who came before you.
As it took those who were before you
بَخِلتُI was miserly بِماwith what مَلَكتَyou owned فَقِفso pause رُوَيداًa little while
كَأَنَّكَas though you قَدalready وَهَبتَyou gave فَلَمyet not يَجُزcount as valid لَكfor you
I was miserly with what you owned; so pause awhile,
You were stingy with what you possessed so stand still
As though you had given it away, yet it had not counted for you.
As if you had given it away and it was not yours
كَأَنَّكَas though you عَنin قَريبٍa short while بِالمَناياby the fates of death
وَقَدand already شَتَّتنَthey scattered بَعدَafter الجَمعِthe gathering شَملَكyour company
It is as though you were soon overtaken by death,
As if you will soon meet your death
And it had scattered your company after its gathering.
After it disperses those gathered around you
أَلاbehold لِلَّهِto God أَنتَyou مَحَلُّa repository عِلمٍof knowledge
رَأَيتَyou have seen العِلمَknowledge لَيسَdoes not يَكُفُّcurb جَهلَكyour ignorance
Ah, God bless you! You are a repository of knowledge,
By God, you are a source of knowledge
You have seen that knowledge does not curb your ignorance.
You saw knowledge does not suffice your ignorance
أَلاbehold لِلَّهِto God أَنتَyou حَسَبتَyou reckoned فِعليmy deed
عَلَيَّagainst me فَعِبتَهُso you faulted it وَنَسيتَand you forgot فِعلَكyour deed
Ah, God bless you! You have reckoned my deed
By God, you thought me at fault
Against me, then faulted it and forgotten your own.
And took me to task while forgetting your own acts
أَلاbehold لِلَّهِto God أَنتَyou دَعِabandon التَمَنّيwishful thinking
وَلاand do not تَأمَنfeel safe from عَواقِبَهُits consequences فَتَهلَكso you perish
Ah, God bless you! Abandon wishful thinking,
By God, leave off wishing
And do not feel safe from its consequences, lest you perish.
And do not feel safe from its consequences or you will perish
وَخُذand begin فيin عَذلِreproaching نَفسِكَyourself كُلَّevery يَومٍday
لَعَلَّperhaps النَفسَthe soul تَقبَلُwill accept مِنكَfrom you عَذلَكyour reproach
And begin reproaching yourself every day,
And blame yourself each day
Perhaps the soul will accept your reproach from you.
Perhaps the soul will accept your blame
أَلَمhave you not تَرَseen جِدَّةَthe newness الأَيّامِof days تَبلىwears away
وَأَنَّand that الحادِثاتِcalamities يُرِدنَthey seek قَتلَكto kill you
Have you not seen that the newness of days wears away,
Have you not seen the new days grow old
And that calamities seek to kill you?
And calamities intend to kill you
أَلاtake heed فَاِخرُجthen leave مِنَfrom الدُنياthis world مُخِفّاًlightly burdened
وَقَدِّمand send ahead عَنكَaway from you بَينَbetween يَدَيكَyour two hands ثِقلَكyour burden
Take heed: leave this world lightly burdened,
Come out from the world lightly burdened
And send your burden away from you, ahead of you.
And send forth ahead of you your heavy load
رَأَيتُI have seen المَوتَdeath مَسلَكَthe path كُلِّof every حَيٍّliving being
وَلَمand not أَرَI have seen دونَهُapart from it لِلحَيِّfor the living مَسلَكa path
I have seen that death is the path of every living being,
I saw death the path of all the living
And I have seen no path for the living apart from it.
And I did not see for the living a path other than it
