What comes to you, O earth,

From those whom softness and ease have nourished?

I saw one who met his death,

And it was as though his beloved's love were hatred.

How strange that one with hope is beguiled by it,

Yet his certainty that he will perish is absolute!

And everyone who lives by his deeds

Will one day be presented before his Judge.

O you who dwell in a tangled abode,

And its dweller's footing there is slippery!

The son of Adam has, over the changing course of what

Befalls him, no power to extend or curtail it.
