سَمَّيتَyou called نَفسَكَyourself بِالكَلامِin speech حَكيماwise
وَلقَدand indeed أَراكَI see you عَلىin القَبيحِwhat is vile مُقيماpersisting
You have called yourself wise in words,
You name yourself wise in words
And indeed I see you persisting in evil.
Yet I see you dwelling in disgrace
وَلَقَدand indeed أَراكَI see you مِنَin الغَوايَةِwaywardness مُثرِياًrich
وَلَقَدand indeed أَراكَI see you مِنَof الرَشادِright guidance عَديماdevoid
And indeed I see you rich in waywardness,
And I see you enriching from misguidance
And indeed I see you devoid of right guidance.
Yet I see you empty of guidance
مَنَعَdenied الجَديدانِthe two ever-renewed ones (day and night) البَقاءَpermanence وَأَبلَياand they both wore away
أُمَماًnations خَلَونَthey passed away مِنَof القُرونِgenerations قَديماlong ago
Day and night have denied permanence and worn away
Time and fate denied existence and wore away
Nations of earlier generations, long since gone.
Nations that were ancient long ago
أَغفَلتَyou neglected مِنof دارِthe abode البَقاءِeternity نَعيمَهاits bliss
وَطَلَبتَand you sought فيin دارِthe abode الفَناءِpassing away نَعيماbliss
You neglected the bliss of the abode of eternity,
You neglected the bliss of the Everlasting Abode
And sought bliss in the abode of transience.
And sought bliss in the Abode of Extinction
وَعَصَيتَand you disobeyed رَبَّكَyour Lord ياO اِبنَson of آدَمَAdam جاهِداًstriving hard
فَوَجَدتَso you found رَبَّكَyour Lord إِذwhen عَصَيتَyou disobeyed حَليماforbearing
And you disobeyed your Lord, O son of Adam, with all your might,
And you disobeyed your Lord, O son of Adam, stubbornly
So you found your Lord, when you disobeyed, forbearing.
Yet you found your Lord Forgiving when you disobeyed
وَسَأَلتَand you asked رَبَّكَyour Lord ياO اِبنَson of آدَمَAdam رَغبَةًout of longing
فَوَجَدتَso you found رَبَّكَyour Lord إِذwhen سَأَلتَyou asked كَريماgenerous
And you asked your Lord, O son of Adam, out of longing,
And you asked your Lord, O son of Adam, out of greed
So you found your Lord, when you asked, generous.
Yet you found your Lord Generous when you asked
وَدَعَوتَand you called upon رَبَّكَyour Lord ياO اِبنَson of آدَمَAdam رَهبَةًout of fear
فَوَجَدتَso you found رَبَّكَyour Lord إِذwhen دَعَوتَyou called upon رَحيماmerciful
And you called upon your Lord, O son of Adam, out of fear,
And you called upon your Lord, O son of Adam, in awe
So you found your Lord, when you called upon Him, merciful.
Yet you found your Lord Merciful when you called
فَلَئِنso if indeed شَكَرتَyou gave thanks لَتَشكُرَنَّyou will surely give thanks لِمُنعِمٍto a benefactor
وَلَئِنand if indeed كَفَرتَyou were ungrateful لَتَكفُرَنَّyou will surely be ungrateful to عَظيماa mighty one
So if you give thanks, you will surely thank a benefactor;
So if you are thankful, you will thank a Benefactor
And if you are ungrateful, you will surely be ungrateful to a mighty one.
And if you deny, you will deny the Tremendous

So blessed is God, who has never ceased to be
Glorified is Allah, Who has always been
Sovereign, knowing what bosoms conceal.
