We ask God for contentment with what He decrees.

God is enough for me; whatever He wills, He decrees.

    وَأَرادَ اللَهُ شَيئاً فَمَضى

    We wished, but God denied us our wish;

And God willed something, and it came to pass.

Many a matter I went to bed having firmly settled,

Then, before I reached morning, it had come undone.

How many, how many a despised trifle

Has left many people wasting away.

Many a life of people gone before

Once was; then they passed away, and it too ended.

I marvel at death—how dreadful it is!

Whom have we seen die without being cast aside?

The dead man is cast aside at once,

And his family forsakes him when he dies.

The worst of my days is the day when

I accept this world in exchange for my faith.
