خَليلَيَّmy two friends إِنَّindeed الهَمَّsorrow قَدmay يَتَفَرَّجُbe dispelled
وَمَنand whoever كانَwas يَبغيseeks الحَقَّthe truth فَالحَقُّthen the truth أَبلَجُclear and radiant
My two friends, sorrow may yet be dispelled.
My friend, worries will surely subside,
And whoever seeks the truth—the truth is clear and radiant.
And he who seeks the truth, the truth is more eloquent,
وَذوand one possessing الحَقَّthe truth لاnot يَرتابُdoubts وَالعَدلُand justice قائِمٌstanding
عَلىupon طُرُقاتِthe paths of الهَقِّtruth وَالشَرُّand evil أَعوَجُcrooked
And one who holds to truth does not doubt, and justice stands
The just man does not doubt, and justice remains,
Upon the paths of truth, while evil is crooked.
On the paths of truth, while evil is crooked.
وَأَخلاقُand the virtues of ذيone possessing التَقوىpiety وَذيand one possessing البِرِّrighteousness فيin الدُجىthe darkness
لَهُنَّfor them سِراجٌa lamp بَينَbetween عَينَيهِhis two eyes مُسرَجُlit
And the virtues of the pious and righteous man, in the darkness,
The conduct of the pious and the righteous in adversity
Have a lamp lit between his eyes.
Has for them a lamp between their eyes shining.
وَنِيّاتُand the intentions of أَهلِpeople of الصِدقِtruthfulness بيضٌwhite نَقِيَّةٌpure
وَأَلسُنُand the tongues of أَهلِpeople of الصِدقِtruthfulness لاnot تَتَلَجلَجُfalter in speech
And the intentions of the truthful are white and pure.
And the intentions of the truthful are pure white,
And the tongues of the truthful do not falter.
While the tongues of the truthful do not waver.
وَلَيسَand there is not لِمَخلوقٍfor a creature عَلىagainst اللَهِGod حُجَّةٌan argument
وَلَيسَand there is not لَهُfor him مِنfrom حُجَّةِthe argument of اللَهِGod مَخرَجُan escape
And no creature has any argument against God,
No creature has any argument against Allah,
Nor any escape from God's argument.
And he has no escape from Allah's argument.
لَقَدindeed دَرَجَتpassed away مِنّاfrom among us قُرونٌgenerations كَثيرَةٌmany
وَنَحنُand we سَنَمضيwe shall go بَعدَهُنَّafter them وَنَدرُجُand we shall pass away
Indeed, many generations of our people have passed away,
Many generations have passed from us,
And we shall go after them and pass away.
And we will pass after them and follow.
رُوَيدَكَtake your time ياO ذاpossessor of القَصرِthe palace فيin شُرُفاتِهِits balconies
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you عَنهاfrom them تُستَخَفُّyou are hurried away وَتُزعَجُand you are driven out
Gently now, O lord of the palace, upon its balconies:
Slow down, O you with a palace and its balconies,
For you will be hurried away from them and driven out.
For you will be mocked for abandoning it and disturbed.
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you عَمّاfrom what اختَرتَهُyou chose it لَمُبَعَّدٌsurely sent far away
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you مِمّاfrom what فيin يَدَيكَyour two hands لَمُخرَجُsurely driven out
And you will surely be removed from what you chose,
You are far from what you have chosen,
And you will surely be driven from what is in your hands.
And you have no escape from what is in your hands.
أَلاbehold رُبَّmany a ذيwearer of طِمرٍa tattered garment غَداcame to be فيin كَرامَةٍhonor
وَمِلكٍand dominion بِتيجانِwith crowns of الخُلودِeternity مُتَوَّجُcrowned
Behold, many a rag-clad man has come to honor,
Oh, how many disgraced were honored,
And dominion, crowned with the crowns of eternity.
And kings crowned with eternity's diadems.
لَعَمرُكَby your life ماnot الدُنياthis world لَدَيَّto me نَفيسَةٌprecious
وَإِنand even if زَخرَفَadorned الغاوُونَthe misguided فيهاin it وَزَبرَجواand they embellished
By your life, this world is not precious to me,
By your life, the world is not precious to me,
Even if the misguided adorn and embellish it.
Even if the misguided adorn it and embroider it.
وَإِنand even if كانَتِwas الدُنياthis world إِلَيَّto me حَبيبَةًdear
فَإِنّيfor indeed I إِلىof حَظّيmy share مِنَof الدينِfaith أَحوَجُmore in need
And even if this world is dear to me,
And if the world was dear to me,
Yet I have greater need of my share of faith.
My need for religion would be greater.
