أَتَجمَعُdo you amass? مالاًwealth لاnot تُقَدِّمُyou send ahead بَعضَهُsome of it
لِنَفسِكَfor yourself ذُخراًa store إِنَّindeed ذاthis لَسُقوطُsurely a failing
Do you amass wealth without sending some of it ahead
You hoard wealth without spending some
As a store for yourself? Surely this is folly.
For yourself as provision - that is ruin
وَتُوصيand you make a bequest بِهِof it بَعدَafter المَماتِdeath جَهالَةًout of ignorance
وَتَترُكُهُand you leave it حَياًalive وَأَنتَwhile you are بَسيطُoutstretched
And foolishly bequeath it after death,
And bequeath it ignorantly after death
And leave it alive while you lie outstretched.
Leaving it while alive though destitute

Your share of what you have been tirelessly amassing:
Your share of what you always hoard
Two little garments of Coptic linen, and burial spices.
Is just two shrouds made somewhere in Egypt
كَأَنَّكَas though you قَدalready جُهِّزتَyou have been prepared for burial تُدعىyou are summoned إِلىto البِلىdecay

As though you have already been prepared for burial, summoned to decay,
As if you're shrouded, called to decay
Your bier creaking in the hands of men.
With your coffin carried by men yelling
وَعايَنتَand you have beheld هَولاًa terror لاnot يُعايَنُis beheld مِثلُهُits like

And you have beheld a terror whose like is never beheld,
You saw a horror like none other
And the power of a Lord that encompasses His servants.
And the power of a Lord over all surrounding

And you have come to an abode that is the true abode—not the one
And you reached a home, the home - not that
Where you dwelt alive and vigorous.
In which you lived, while vigorous and active

A dwelling where people—woe to you—are equal:
A place where people gather and equals
Proud, noble lords and Nabataeans alike.
Hunters, nobles, commons, and weak mingle
