O ʿUtb, what have I to do with you, and you with me?
O Beauty, what is my state and what is yours?
Be gentle, my sister, in wielding your power.
Be gentle, my sister, with your rule

When you appeared upon a she-mule,

The earth shone at your radiance,
The earth shone bright with your proof
حَتّىso that كَأَنَّas though الشَمسَthe sun مَخفوفَةٌencircled (apparently intended)
حَتّى كَأَنَّ الشَمسَ مَخفوفَةٌ
بَينَamong جَواريكِyour slave girls وَخِصيانِكand your eunuchs
بَينَ جَواريكِ وَخِصيانِك
So that it seemed the sun was encircled
As if the sun was eclipsed
Among your slave girls and your eunuchs.
Among your maids and eunuchs

ثُمَّ شَدَدتيهِ بِأَشطانِك
You seized my heart like this, by force,
You seized my heart forcibly
Then bound it tight with your ropes.
Then tightened it with your hairlocks

Fear God in slaying a Muslim youth
By God, He did not break the pact and betray you
Who neither broke the pledge nor betrayed you.
In killing a Muslim man

Woe is me! What have I to do with your denial?
Woe to me! What is mine and what is your denial?

By God, were I not afraid of death,
By God, if I did not fear rejection
I would say: “At your service, and glory be to you!”
I would say, "At your service," and "Glory to You"
