    Alas for deaths, alas for parting and doom!

    Every gathering in this world ends in parting.

    Time wears out what is new after its splendor,

    And time severs the bond between two who are close.

    لا تَأمَنَنَّ يَدَ الدُنيا عَلى اِثنَينِ

    You have indeed seen the world's hand dividing;

    Never trust the world's hand with two people.

    Praise be to God—unceasing praise forever.

    The greedy have indeed adorned themselves with disgrace.

    There is no adornment except for one content with living on little.

    Indeed, contentment is the robe of dignity and beauty.

    The home—if you knew, O brother of merriment—

    Is a home ahead of you, where the eye finds delight.

    How long shall we live through the days, counting them,

    Yet in them we are only between two days:

    لَعَلَّهُ أَجلَبُ اليَومَينِ لِلحَينِ

    A day that has passed, and a day we hope for;

    Perhaps it is the likelier of the two days to bring doom.
