وَلاand do not تُغَرَّنَّever be deceived فيin دُنياكَyour worldly life بِالأَمَلِby hope
Make provision for yourself, and remember the hour of death.
Prepare yourself and remember the hour of death
And never be deceived by hope in your worldly life.
And do not be deceived in your world by hope
سابِقrace ahead of حُتوفَfatal strokes of الرَدىdeath وَاِعمَلand work عَلىat مَهَلٍan unhurried pace

ماas long as دُمتَyou remain فيin هَذِهِthis الدُنياworld عَلىwith مَهَلِrespite
Outrace death's fatal strokes, and work at a measured pace,
Hasten to meet the events of fate and act steadily
While you still have respite in this world.
As long as you are in this world steadily
وَاِعلَمand know بِأَنَّكَthat you مَسؤولٌare answerable وَمُفتَحَصٌand subject to scrutiny

And know that you will be questioned and examined
And know that you will be held accountable and inspected
About what you have done, and confronted with your deeds.
For what you have done and presented with the deed
لاdo not تَلعَبَنَّever toy بِكَwith you الدُنياthe world وَزُخرُفُهاand its glitter
فَإِنَّهاfor it قُرِنَتhas been likened بِالظِلِّto a shadow فيin المَثَلِthe proverb
Never let the world and its glitter toy with you,
Do not let the world and its ornaments play with you
For it has been likened to a shadow in the proverb.
For it is coupled with shade in the example
لاnot يَحرُزُsafeguards النَفسَthe soul إِلّاexcept ذوone possessing مُراقَبَةٍvigilance

None safeguards the soul but one who is vigilant,
No soul is safe except one who is vigilant
Who passes evening and morning in this world in fear.
Spending the night and morning in this world anxious
ماhow أَقرَبَnear المَوتَdeath مِنto أَهلِthe people of الحَياةِlife وَماand how
أَحجىfitting اللَبيبَthe wise person بِحُسنِfor goodness in القَولِspeech وَالعَمَلِand action
How near death is to the living, and how
How close is death to the people of life and how
Fitting it is for the wise to speak and act well!
The sensible person is perplexed by good words and deeds
وَالمَوتُand death مَدرَجَةٌa path لِلناسِfor people كُلِّهِمُall of them

And death is a path that all people take,
And death is a path for all people
Forced toward it against their will, where all roads meet.
Forcibly leading to it reluctantly all roads
ماhow أَحسَنَbeautiful الدينَfaith وَالدُنياand worldly life إِذاwhen اِجتَمَعاthey both unite
وَأَقبَحَand how ugly الكُفرَunbelief وَالإِفلاسَand destitution بِالرَجُلِin a man
How beautiful are faith and worldly life when they unite,
How good is religion and the world when they are united
And how ugly are unbelief and destitution in a man!
And how ugly are disbelief and bankruptcy in a man
