A man, as his lifespan is prolonged,

Is like a garment that wears out after being new.

When one dies, those who loved him turn

Away from him and abandon their love for him.

And his life is breath counted out for him,

And his death completes his allotted count.

And his destination, after his vigor

Among people, is the darkness of his solitary home.

How strange that one awake should squander what

He needs on the day of his slumber!

    ما نَستَعِدُّ لَهُ بِعُدَّتِهِ

    Departure has drawn near, while we are at play;

We do not prepare for it with the provisions it requires.

And seldom indeed do calamities spare

Youth's wild exuberance and the heat of its blaze.
