Restrain your tears: every living being must perish.
Stop your tears, for all that lives must pass away
And endure the blows of time's calamities.
And be patient for the blows of fate’s caprice
ياO دارِيَmy abode الحَقَّtrue الَّتيwhich لَمdid not أَبنِهاI build it
فيماamong what أُشَيِّدُهُI erect it مِنَof البُنيانِthe buildings
O my true abode, which I have not built
O my home! Though I did not build you right
among the buildings I erect,
As I erected you from bricks and stone
كَيفَhow العَزاءُsolace وَلاand no مَحالَةَescape إِنَّنيindeed I
يَوماًone day إِلَيكِto you مُشَيِّعيmy escorts إِخوانيmy brothers
how can there be solace, when inevitably I
How can I be consoled when, without fail,
will one day be escorted to you by my brothers,
One day my brothers will walk with me here
نَعشاًa bier يُكَفكِفُهُholds it steady الرِجالُthe men وَفَوقَهُand upon it

on a bier held steady by men, upon which lies
A corpse atop a bier held by men, and o’er it
a body sold for the lowest of prices?
A body sold for coins, however mean
لَولاwere it not for الإِلَهُGod وَأَنَّand that قَلبِيَmy heart مُؤمِنٌbelieving
وَاللَهُand God غَيرُnot مُضَيِّعٍwasting إيمانيmy faith
Were it not for God and the faith within my heart,
Without my faith in God, and my believing heart
—and God will not let my faith go to waste—
For God does not forsake belief, I’d have thought
لَظَنَنتُI would suppose أَوor أَيقَنتُI would be certain عِندَat مَنِيَّتيmy death
أَنَّthat المَصيرَthe final destination إِلىto مَحَلِّa place of هَوانِhumiliation
I would suppose—or know for certain—at my death
Or truly known, when death takes me away
that my destination would be a place of humiliation.
My fate is to a place of degradation
فَبِنورِso by the light of وَجهِكَYour face ياO إِلَهَGod of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
زَحزِحshift إِلَيكَtoward You عَنِaway from السَعيرِthe blazing Fire مَكانيmy place
So, by the light of Your face, O God of Muhammad,
So by the light of your face, O God of Mohammed
shift my place toward You, away from the blazing Fire.
Save me from hellfire, make heaven my place
وَاِمنُنand bestow favor عَلَيَّupon me بِتَوبَةٍwith repentance تَرضىYou are pleased بِهاwith it

ياO ذاPossessor of العُلىsublimity وَالمَنِّand bounty وَالإِحسانِand beneficence
And grant me repentance that pleases You,
And bless me with a repentance You accept
O Possessor of sublimity, bounty, and beneficence.
O Most High, Bestower of bounty and grace
