نَبِيِّthe prophet of الهُدىguidance وَالمُصطَفىand the chosen one وَالمُؤَيَّدِand the supported one
Peace upon the grave of the Prophet Muhammad,
Peace be upon the grave of Prophet Muhammad
the prophet of guidance, the chosen one and the divinely supported.
The Prophet of guidance, the Chosen One, the Supported
نَبِيٍّa prophet هَداناguided us اللَهُGod بَعدَafter ضَلالَةٍgoing astray
بِهِthrough him لَمnot نَكُنwe would have been لَولاwere it not for هُداهُhis guidance لِنَهتَديto find guidance
A prophet—God guided us after we had gone astray
The Prophet who guided us after misguidance
through him; without his guidance, we would not have found the way.
Without his guidance we would not be guided
فَكانَso was رَسولُthe Messenger of اللَهِGod مِفتاحَa key to رَحمَةٍmercy
مِنَfrom اللَهِGod أَهداهاHe bestowed it لِكُلِّon every مُوَحِّدِmonotheist
So God's Messenger was a key to mercy
So God's Messenger was the key to mercy
from God, which He bestowed on every monotheist.
Which God granted to every monotheist
وَكانَand was رَسولُthe Messenger of اللَهِGod أَفضَلَthe best مَنof those who مَشىwalked
عَلىupon الأَرضِthe earth إِلّاexcept أَنَّهُthat he لَمnot يُخَلَّدِwas made immortal
And God's Messenger was the best of those who walked
And God's Messenger was the best who walked
upon the earth, though he was not made immortal.
Upon earth, though not made immortal
شَهِدتُI bear witness عَلىto أَنthat لاno نُبُوَّةَprophethood بَعدَهُafter him
وَأَنand that لَيسَis not حَيٌّa living being بَعدَهُafter him بِمُخَلَّدِimmortal
I bear witness that there is no prophethood after him,
I bear witness that there is no prophecy after him
and that no living being after him is immortal;
And none living after him is immortal
وَأَنَّand that البِلىdecay يَأتيcomes عَلىupon كُلِّevery جِدَّةٍnewness
وَأَنَّand that المَناياdeaths لِلعِبادِfor humankind بِمَرصَدِlying in wait
and that decay overtakes all that is new,
And that decay comes upon all grandeur
and that death lies in wait for humankind.
And death lies in wait for all mortals
تَبارَكَblessed is مَنHe who يَجريcomes to pass الفِراقُparting بِأَمرِهِat His command

Blessed is He at whose command parting comes to pass,
Blessed is He who decrees separation
and who gathers people from scattered places without a prearranged meeting.
And gathers from far and wide without appointment
أَياO صاحِfriend إِنَّindeed الدارَthis abode دارُa place of تَبَلُّغٍsustenance for the journey
إِلىto بَرزَخِthe intermediate realm of المَوتىthe dead وَدارُand a place of تَزَوِّدِgathering provisions
O friend, this abode is a place to sustain you on the way
O companions! This abode is one of attainment
to the intermediate realm of the dead, and a place to gather provisions.
To the intermediate realm of the dead and preparation
أَلَستَdo you not تَرىsee أَنَّthat الحَوادِثَcalamities جَمَّةٌare numerous
يَروحُcomes in the evening عَلَيناupon us صَرفُهُنَّtheir vicissitudes وَيَغتَديand comes in the morning
Do you not see that calamities are many?
Do you not see that calamities amass
Their vicissitudes visit us evening and morning.
Whose vicissitudes assault us violently?
تَبَلَّغsustain yourself مِنَfrom الدُنياthis world وَنَلand obtain مِنfrom كَفافِهاits sufficient sustenance

Sustain yourself from this world, and take only enough from it;
Attain sufficiency in this world but do not
and do not cling to it in your heart or in your hand.
Harbor it in your conscience or hand
وَكُنand be داخِلاًentering فيهاinto it كَأَنَّكَas though you خارِجٌwere departing

And enter it as though you were departing
And enter into it as if you are leaving
from it to another abode, today or tomorrow.
To another than it today or tomorrow
