    No parent is immortal, nor any child.

    Every stalwart is betrayed by his endurance.

    دورَ وَلَم يَحيَ مِنهُمُ أَحَدُ

    As though the people of the graves had never dwelt in the

    houses, and none of them had ever lived;

    And had never been except in their present state,

    Never born before it, nor ever having begotten children.

    O you who forget death, while it remembers you,

    Have you any power against death, should it come to you?

    O dweller in the dome that is encircled by

    your guards, the troops, and the weapons,

    دارُكَ يُبلي جَديدَها الأَبَدُ

    Your house is a house whose inhabitant dies;

    Your house—endless time wears out what is new in it.

    يَخطِرُ مِنكَ الذِراعُ وَالعَضَدُ

    You strut merrily in the bordered cloak of youth;

    Your forearm and upper arm sway.

    You weep for those who have passed away, yet tomorrow you

    will be led by death to where they went.

    If you knew what was intended for you by

    death, sleeplessness would wear out your eyelids.
