أَماindeed وَالَّذيby the One who يُحيىis given life بِهِthrough Him وَيُماتُand is made to die
لَقَلَّindeed, rare is فَتىًa young man إِلّاexcept that لَهُhe has هَفَواتُlapses
Indeed, by Him through whom one is given life and made to die,
By Him who gives life and death
Scarcely a young man is without lapses.
No youth but has lapses
وَماand there is no مِنany فَتاًyoung man إِلّاexcept that سَيَبلىwill wear away جَديدُهُhis freshness
وَتُفنيand wear away الفَتىthe young man الرَوحاتُevening journeys وَالدَلَجاتُand night journeys
And there is no young man whose freshness will not wear away.
And no young man but his sharpness will be blunted
And evening and nighttime journeys wear the young man away.
And youth's vitality and vigor will fade
يَغُرُّdeceives الفَتىthe young man تَحريكُهُhis movement وَسُكونُهُand his stillness
وَلاand there is no بُدَّescape يَوماًone day تَسكُنُfall still الحَرَكاتُthe movements
His movement and his stillness deceive the young man.
A young man is stirred to move and to rest
And one day, inevitably, all movement will cease.
But a day will surely come to still all movements
وَمَنand whoever يَتَتَبَّعpursues شَهوَةًa desire بَعدَafter شَهوَةٍa desire
مُلِحّاًpersistently تَقَسَّمdivide up عَقلَهُhis mind الشَهَواتُdesires
And whoever pursues desire after desire,
He who pursues passions, one after another
Persistently, will have his mind divided by desires.
His reason fragmented by desires
وَمَنand who يَأمَنُtrusts الدُنياthe world وَلَيسَand there is no لِحُلوِهاfor its sweetness
وَلاnor مُرِّهاits bitterness فيماin what رَأَيتَyou have seen ثَباتُconstancy
And who can trust the world, when neither its sweetness
He who is safe from the world, unaffected by its sweetness
Nor its bitterness, as you have seen, endures?
Or bitterness, such stability I have not seen
أَجابَتanswered نُفوسٌsouls داعِيَthe summoner of اللَهِGod فَانقَضَتand so passed away
وَأُخرىand others لِداعيfor the summoner of المَوتِdeath مُنتَظِراتُwaiting
Some souls answered God's summoner and passed away,
Some souls respond to God's call and depart
And others await death's summoner.
Others await the caller of death
وَماand have not زالَتِceased الإِيامُthe days بِالسُخطِwith displeasure وَالرِضاand contentment
لَهُنَّfor them وَعيدٌa threat مَرَّةٌat one time وَعِداتُand promises
And the days have never ceased, with displeasure and contentment,
Displeasure and pleasure with fate
To bring them a threat at one time, and promises at another.
Alternate warnings and promises for them
إِذاwhen اِزدَدتَyou gain more مالاًwealth قُلتَyou say ماليmy wealth وَثَروَتيand my riches
وَمالَكَand you have nothing إِلّاexcept اللَهُGod وَالحَسَناتُand good deeds
When you gain more wealth, you say, 'My wealth and my riches!'
If you gain wealth you say "my money and riches"
Yet you have nothing but God and good deeds.
But what is yours except God and good deeds
