Safety truly lies in being content with what has been decreed.

Whoever is content will surely be safe, by God's leave.

A man hopes, though hopes are false,

And hopes accompany a man as long as he lives.

Ah, many a man and woman weeping over a dead man

Were themselves wept over not long after that dead man.

And many a herald of death, who for a time announced his loved ones' deaths,

Kept announcing deaths until it was said, "His death has been announced."

My knowledge that I shall taste death has spoiled for me

Life's sweetness, so life is not serene for me.

How many a brother the worms of the earth feed upon,

Yet, when alive, he fed on life's sweetness.

With the dead man, his memory among those who recall him fades.

Whoever departs as one from whom nothing is hoped is forgotten.

When one dies, people's hopes of him die; so they show

Him coldness; and whoever inspires no hope is shunned.

    إِن لَم يَكُن رائِحاً بي كانَ مُغتَدِيا

    Indeed, departing from this world surely troubles me;

If it does not carry me off at evening, it will in the morning.

Praise be to God! Blessed is the fortunate; and whoever

God has not made fortunate through piety is indeed wretched.

How many a heedless man, oblivious to death's pools, at play,

Spends evening and morning ever riding after what he desires.

    ما كُلُّ شَيءٍ يُرى إِلّا لِيَنقَضِيا

    And all the eye beholds is passing away, coming to an end;

Nothing is seen but that it must pass away.
