لهجتdwelt continually بذكرِكon mention of you السنthe tongues المداحِof the praisers
لهجت بذكرِك السن المداحِ
وسمتand rose بذكرِكthrough mention of you رُتبَةُthe rank الأمداحِof praises
وسمت بذكرِك رُتبَةُ الأمداحِ
The praisers' tongues have dwelt on your name,
My years have sung your praise
And the rank of praise has risen through mention of you.
And my highest ranks are marked by your renown
أزرىput to shame نداكَyour bounty بِكُلِّevery بَحرٍsea زاخِرٍsurging
أزرى نداكَ بِكُلِّ بَحرٍ زاخِرٍ
هَبَّتblew عليهِover it عواصِفُtempests of الأرواحِthe winds
هَبَّت عليهِ عواصِفُ الأرواحِ
Your bounty has put every surging sea to shame,
I race to your call with every flowing sea
Over which raging winds have blown.
Upon which gales of souls have blown
بمحمدٍin Muhammad وزرَfound refuge الورىmankind وبماand in what لهمbelongs to them
بمحمدٍ وزرَ الورى وبما لهم
فيon كُلِّevery يومday of ندىbounty ويومand a day of كفاحِدcombat (apparent typo)
في كُلِّ يوم ندى ويوم كفاحِد
In Muhammad mankind found refuge, and in what is theirs,
With Muhammad who adorned the earth
On every day of bounty and every day of combat.
And with his kin who strove each day
فرعٌa branch سيحكيwill resemble أصلَهُits root ولقدand indeed حكىhas resembled
فرعٌ سيحكي أصلَهُ ولقد حكى
بمقاصدٍwith aims قدalready سددتset aright وسلاحِand arms
بمقاصدٍ قد سددت وسلاحِ
A branch will resemble its root, and indeed already has,
A branch tells of its roots, and it has told
With aims already set aright, and with arms.
With resolute aims and arms array
تأبىrefuses الخلافةُthe caliphate منanyone سوىother than أكفائِهاits worthy equals
تأبى الخلافةُ من سوى أكفائِها
والجدُّand earnestness غيرُnot مُقابَلٍmet بمزاحِwith jest
والجدُّ غيرُ مُقابَلٍ بمزاحِ
The caliphate accepts none but those worthy of it,
The caliphate spurns all unfit for it
And earnestness is not met with jest.
And glory is not matched by jest
غُشيتwere enveloped بنورِكُمin your light البلادُthe lands فمنso whoever بهاis within them
غُشيت بنورِكُم البلادُ فمن بها
أغنىmade free of need عنfor الإصباحِdaybreak والمصباحِand a lamp
أغنى عن الإصباحِ والمصباحِ
The lands are enveloped in your light, so those within them
Your light has flooded the lands, so none need
Need neither daybreak nor a lamp.
A first or late glow in the west
سكنتgrew calm ببيعتهthrough allegiance to him القلوبthe hearts ولمand had not تزلceased
سكنت ببيعته القلوب ولم تزل
تهفوflutter منfrom الإشفاقapprehension دونwithout جناحِa wing
تهفو من الإشفاق دون جناحِ
Hearts grew calm at the pledge of allegiance to him; they had never ceased
With his oath, hearts were settled and still yearn
To flutter with apprehension, without a wing.
From deepest care without wings pressed
عمَّencompassed السُرورُjoy بهاthrough it البسيطةَthe earth كُلَّهاall of it
عمَّ السُرورُ بها البسيطةَ كُلَّها
كالصبحِlike dawn فاضpoured forth علىover رُباًhills وبطاحِand plains
كالصبحِ فاض على رُباً وبطاحِ
Through it, joy spread across the whole earth,
Gladness filled the plain, all of it
Like dawn flooding hills and plains.
Like dawn spilling over hill and dale
لاmay ... not زلتyou cease للأعيادto the festivals تمنحُyou grant بهجةًsplendor
لا زلت للأعياد تمنحُ بهجةً
يُعييoverwhelms سناهاits radiance أعينَthe eyes اللماحِof the keen-sighted
يُعيي سناها أعينَ اللماحِ
May you ever grant the festivals a splendor
Still you grant festivals a joy
Whose radiance overwhelms the eyes of the keen-sighted,
That makes the keenest sight fail
مستوفياًcompleting in full عدداًa count إلىto مددٍan extended span بهِwithin it
مستوفياً عدداً إلى مددٍ بهِ
مددٌspans of time طوالٌlong لاnot تعدُّare counted فِساحِvast
مددٌ طوالٌ لا تعدُّ فِساحِ
Completing the full count through a span containing
Complete in number to lengths with him
Long, vast stretches of time beyond reckoning,
Endless lengths the gazes curtail
متسربلاًclad بالسعدِin good fortune متشحاًmantled بهin it
متسربلاً بالسعدِ متشحاً به
مستفتحاًseeking victory بالواحدِthrough the One الفتاحِthe Opener
مستفتحاً بالواحدِ الفتاحِ
Clad in good fortune, mantled in it,
Raimented in bliss, wrapped in it
Seeking victory through the One, the Opener.
Unlocked by the Opener, unveiled
