لا تنزلن على بني غفجومِ
O wayfarer, if you pass through Tadla,
O traveler, if you pass by Tadla
Do not lodge with the Banu Ghafjum.
Do not stop at the tribe of Ghafjum
أرضٌa land أغاربهاits strangers العدوthe enemy فلنso you will not ترىsee
أرضٌ أغاربها العدو فلن ترى
إلاexcept مجاوبةthe answering of الصدىthe echo للبومِto the owls
إلا مجاوبة الصدى للبومِ
A land whose strangers are the enemy; you will see nothing
A land whose people the enemy has robbed
Except the echo answering the owls.
So you will only hear the hooting of the owl
قومٌa people طوواfolded up طنبthe tent-rope of السماحةِgenerosity بينهمamong themselves
قومٌ طووا طنب السماحةِ بينهم
لكنهمbut they نشرواunfurled لواءَthe banner of اللومِblame
لكنهم نشروا لواءَ اللومِ
A people who have folded up generosity's tent-rope among themselves,
A people who once were most generous
Yet they have unfurled the banner of blame.
But now only hoist the banner of blame
لاحظno share فيin أموالهمtheir wealth ونوالهمand their bounty
لاحظ في أموالهم ونوالهم
للسائلِfor the petitioner العافيseeking gifts ولاnor المحرومِthe deprived
للسائلِ العافي ولا المحرومِ
There is no share in their wealth and bounty
Note in their wealth and plenty
For the petitioner seeking gifts, nor for the deprived.
Neither the asking nor the deprived have a share
لاnot يملكونَthey can do إذاwhen استبيحis violated حريمهمtheir sanctuary
لا يملكونَ إذا استبيح حريمهم
إلاexcept الصراحَcrying aloud بدعوةِwith the prayer of المظلومِthe wronged
إلا الصراحَ بدعوةِ المظلومِ
They can do nothing when their sanctuary is violated
If their sanctuary is violated
But cry aloud with the prayer of the wronged.
They can only cry out, calling for justice
ياO ليتنيwould that I were منof غيرهمothers than them ولوand even if أننيthat I
يا ليتني من غيرهم ولو أنني
منof أهلِthe people of فاسٍFez منof بنيthe sons of الملجومِal-Maljum
من أهلِ فاسٍ من بني الملجومِ
Oh, would that I were of another people, even if I were
Oh, if only I were from another tribe, even
