It was the abode of people before us, who departed
It was once home to people before us, but they left
from it, while their traces remain there.
And abandoned it, though their traces in it remain

By God, had it known the stature of its heir,
By Allah! If I knew the worth of its heir
its hills and lowlands would have sprung toward you.
I would have granted him its ruins and buildings

They said, ‘He revived largesse’; I told them,
They said grants revived it, but I said to them
‘No—largesse did not exist before he did.’
No, it was not before the grants came to be

Praising her, seeing her utmost in generosity?

And who can match Qais Ibn Al-Mulawwah in his lance

Your glorious deeds defy attainment—and how many
Your glories exhaust me, beyond what I can attain
raids of words have been launched against them!
Though many attacks by words have assailed them

And how often the masters of poetry have sought to encompass them,
Rulers of verse have tried to confine them
but their efforts failed, falling short of them.
Yet their efforts fell short before them

These are verses from a servant sincerely devoted to you,
These are the verses of a loyal servant to you
with pure conviction—yet what can verses avail?
Pure in belief, though verses do not avail
