ماno فيin الحياةِlife لمنfor whoever ناواكُمُopposes you طَمَعُhope
إنif نَدَّhe flees خَوفاًin fear ففيthen in أحبولَةٍa snare يَقَعُhe falls
Whoever opposes you has no hope of life.
If he flees in fear, he falls into a snare.
عنfrom كُلِّevery قَوسٍbow صُروفthe turns الدهرِof fate ترشُقُهُshoot at him
فماso no لَهُfor him فيin سوىanything other than التسليمِsurrender مُنتفَعُbenefit
From every bow, the turns of fate shoot at him;
So he finds no benefit in anything but surrender.
ماno للعدوِّfor the enemy بماagainst what أعددتهُyou have prepared it قِبَلٌcapacity to withstand
ولاand not بغيرِby anything other than انقيادِsubmission منهُfrom him تَمتَنِعُyou hold back
The enemy has no strength to face what you have prepared,
And you will not hold back unless he submits.

Terror attacked them with a noiseless army;
So they hung back beyond the pass and cowered.

Brimming cups of humiliation were passed around among them,
Making them drink draughts, with further draughts to follow.

All kingdoms belong to you alone,
And every defiant one willingly follows you.

And the sea is the destination the rivers seek;
So they meet and gather in its reaches.
والشعرُand poetry إنif لمnot يكنit is يin (apparent typo for في) نفسِهِitself حسناًbeautiful
فماthen not تحسنُهُmake it beautiful الأصحابُfriends والشِّبَعُand satiety
And poetry, if it is not beautiful in itself,
Then neither friends nor a full belly can beautify it.

يُبديhe reveals ومنand from فهمِهِhis understanding عندَin the eyes of الورىhumankind يضعُhe lowers
Whoever seeks to describe you fully—his own folly
He reveals, and lowers his understanding in people's eyes.
أضحتhas become علاكَyour glory مكانَat the place of النجمِthe star عنbeyond مدحيmy praise
ماwhat حيلتيmy recourse وبلوغُwhile reaching النجمِthe star ممتنِعُimpossible
Your glory now lies beyond my praise, as distant as a star.
What can I do, when reaching the star is impossible?
